Barnett had rushed for more than 6,000 yards in his prep career, and West Virginia, North Carolina State, James Madison and Liberty all had shown interest.

After the injury, only Liberty made Barnett a scholarship offer.

“Coach (Danny) Rocco called me the day after the injury happened, and he told me they were going to stick with me and they saw something in me,” Barnett said. “He said we were going to get through this together, and they weren’t going to just drop me. They were still very interested.

“I was taken by that.”
