Eighteen Wolfpack seniors were honored prior to Friday’s final regular season home game against Cypress Lake. Accompanied by a parent, guardian or coach, each player was greeted by coach Grant Redhead and principal Tommy O’Connell.
Players from the Class of 2008 -- by far the team's largest graduating class in the school's three years -- are: Tyler Brubach, Steven Crawford, Nickenson Dervil, Tomas Diaz, Kenneth (Sherman) Dyal, Dontavis Edwards, Matt Holdridge, Jimmy Jean, David Kittinger, Adam Leicht, Omar Meikle, Nelson Perry Jr., Hermann Piard, B.J. Purcell, Brad Rucker, Billy Semmer, Jake Smith and Joe Stewart. A sampling of aspirations from the group: Crawford plans to play football at Liberty University and major in business and mechanical engineering.
Asked where he and his younger brother got their talent, Steven Crawford Jr. smiled and began talking about their father Steven Sr., who played middle linebacker at Cypress Lake High three decades ago.
"They called him 'The Wild Man' in high school because he's just a beast. My dad's 6-foot, 230 pounds," Steven Jr. said. "He roughed me up a few times and I know he was going light on me, so I can just imagine what he did to those kids on the field."
The Wild Man's offspring aren't too shabby either.
Steven Jr., 18, and Dallas, 15, have played significant roles in helping South Fort Myers reach the playoffs for the first time. Dallas, a freshman quarterback, has thrown for 1,657 yards and 13 touchdowns, while Steven Jr., a senior wide receiver, has 336 yards receiving and four scores.
One Wolfpack senior is a lock for college football.
Others are certain to follow in the coming months.
Wide receiver Steven Crawford will attend Liberty University in Virginia.
“I really think he’ll do well,” said South coach Grant Redhead. “He did a great job for us and he’s got a bright future ahead of him.”
Crawford, whose 6-foot-4 frame reeled-in seven touchdowns the past two seasons after he transferred from Riverdale, could be used on both sides of the ball.
“I think they’re looking at him as wide receiver full-time and spot play on defense as a (defensive back),” said Redhead.
Crawford, who is a starter on the Wolfpack’s boys basketball team, said he enjoyed his visit up north.
“It’s in the mountains,” said Crawford. “It’s really nice. I love it.”
With Summers and Sanderson, we are set at wideout for the next 4 years, anyone else we can add to that duo is just icing on the cake. This kid looks like he has the potential to be special.
A host of local athletes will officially sign with collegiate programs on Wednesday. Here’s a look at the list of student-athletes and their preference, as of Tuesday:

Three months after making history by winning its first district title, the South Fort Myers football program was back writing another chapter Wednesday morning.
With about a dozen teammates peering through the window of the school’s Career Center, wide receivers Steven Crawford and Brad Rucker signed their letters of intent on National Signing Day in front of family members and the media. Both players are headed to Division I Football Championship Subdivision teams. Crawford will play for Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.; Rucker will suit up for Jacksonville University.
Grant Redhead — South’s only head coach in its three year existence — stood by like a proud papa while Crawford and Rucker signed.

After he transferred from Riverdale following his sophomore year, the 6-foot-3, 190 pound Crawford caught 47 passes for 748 yards in two years at South. He finished with seven career touchdown catches as a Wolfpack while helping the team compile a 15-6 record over the past two years. Crawford was a favorite target of his younger brother Dallas, the team’s freshman standout quarterback.
Crawford said he enjoyed his visit to Liberty and is anxious to start his college career. He wore a blue Liberty t-shirt Wednesday and immediately donned a Liberty cap after signing.
“I’m very excited. I can’t wait. I dream about football. This is where I want to be,” he said. “I’m so grateful to be doing this because everyone doesn’t get this chance.
I admit it caught my eye as well. I assume it is scheduled non-conference matchup. But then again, that is the school that we heard all of the rumors concerning when the Big South brought in Stony Brook. Perhaps that is progressing even further. Pioneer League teams don't typically have many non-conference matchups.
