Listening to Coach Rocco's mid week press conference, he brought up the challenge of defending the option. He emphasized how it stresses everyone on the defense and I thought it would be interesting to look at the matchups we will see on Saturday.

As Lou Holtz says, you really don't defend the triple option, you attack it. Ask Charlie Weiss.

First, the fullback. The heart of the play. He is a crease runner on a course off the guard's butt into b gap, hitting it as hard as he can, not looking for the ball. The QB reads the 1st defender outside the guard. If that defender comes down, the QB disconnects, pulling the ball and attacks the next defender. Big mistake is to underestimate the gutting potential of this runner. Also, he is a runner or a blocker, never a faker.
Assign Dugan (nose), Ackley/Richardson(DE's), and Hursky/Lloyd (ILB) to the FB.

2nd, the QB. One of the compromises of running the option is the beating your QB is exposed to. We must break this kid up. He is the trigger man, and if you can get in his head, it is like screwing up the computer in your car.
Assign Redd/Duke to plant him every opportunity.

3rd, the pitch. Make VMI carry out the full extent of the option. Mayplay is a threat, as being the Big South frosh of the year last year and O player of the week last week. In cover 2 the corners will bang the split end, and then play pitch, with the safeties covering over the top. However, you can switch this up, and have the safeties run the pitch, and go man with the covers. Problem is you have a blocker to deal with, the slot or the front side half back in the wishbone.
Assign Grieser/Dickerson to attack the pitch, as they are good run supporters, and allow your athletes, Hicks/Calvary to cover in man the split ends.

4th, play action off of the triple. The backside safety has to be ready to roll over the top and cover the slip seam route of the slot if they are in double slot formation. The backside corner has to be alone on the backside split end who would run the post versus a vacating safety.

The next chest move to this scheme is counter option, so the backside end, inside backer, and outside linebacker must be ready to attack the qb and pitch, because the front side will be taking care of the playside dive.

Finally the enemy of the option is always pursuit. Everyone must run this play down, all the time, no breaks. Also, mixing up some of the above assignments plays havoc with the reads, linebacker taking QB and OLB to pitch, for example.

Its fun to watch, difficult to defend. Coach Rocco says they run it with great effeciency and timing. And they have executed the big play action pass if you are not thorough.

Great breakdown, madmat....and it takes me back to my HS days when everyone ran it, or the wishbone.

How to defend...
...two words:

Vince. Redd.

I will be interested in seeing how much they run it to his side.

You have to play disciplined... everyone has to play their lane. Getting a good push in the backfield is another key, don't let them even get to the outside.

Vince could play it both ways, 1st make himself big and soft play, which screws with the read......(QB) can he get me, should I pitch, etc. which allows pursuit to come into play. Vince's arms extended, he makes for a long day. Or He could just smack him into next week. I think you will see them attack Brandon Duke. Play him to the short side, put Vince to the field.

If you get soft play, most teams will then go power at you. If you attack, they read their way out and go limp after the pitch.

One thing that Dr Cohu brought up in my coaching class that might be an issue, who is going to fill when the guard pulls to influence the D-lineman that is matched up on him. Defending the option really brings up the importance of the connection between D-line and linebackers, particularly the inside and outside backers to the off-play side (or backside), and the D-end, and especially on the counter option as madmat described. In short, the contain needs to stay at home and not allow all the action going on in the backfield sway them into making a bad commit and then paying for it 60 yards later

That's my question--if Redd is the OLB or the DE, won't VMI just run the other way every time? Who is their right minds will be running towards Vince???

BJ, in our defense, the guards are uncoverd by d linemen. The D ends are on top of the tackles, so if the off. tackle veer releases down inside to the front side linebacker, they should close, knock the OT off course protecting the LB and collision the fullback. If they pull the guard to load on the edge, it will only draw the LB, if they are reading or double reading the back to guard.

As far as running away from Vince, this can be used to our advantage. Play him wide side, or opposite of Maypray. Make them run into the sideline or make the other slot/halfback beat you.

Anybody running the triple option in your league in Northern Ohio, madmat?

Having watched Coach Wachenheim run Ken Hatfield's option down here at Rice for years I can attest to what a pain in the neck it can be to opponents. But its really VMI's only chance to win with their current roster (remember We are Marshall and the veer?).

The key is containment and making sure you hold your ground. But that's easier said than done when you don't get much practice against this set. But if you heard Flames Hotline Tuesday you would know that we have been running Mike Brown as QB on the scout team. And he's likely a MUCH better athlete than Hughes so we are getting some work in this week.

I thought the whole point of your first paragraph was that this offense de-emphasizes athleticism.

Actually the offense masks athletic deficiencies. But don't kid yourself into believing that the capabilities of the QB in this offense define how good the set can operate.

You know it's sad when your scout team is better than the other teams first team!

We do need to be aware of Maypray. He may not be a reciever who would do well in a passing offense, but he showed last week that if allowed to get the ball in space he has the speed to do some damage.

Ohhh 6-7?? Man, wrap it up then 😭
