Eddie Pinigis' first in-season workout in Liberty University's weight room ended with the offensive lineman vomiting in a bucket. Bill Gillespie's sly response: "You know, I-AA football isn't for everybody."

Great story Chris! I'd love to sit in on a session or two and see Bill at work! He's an animal!

One thing not mentioned in this article, which is another tribute to Coach Gillespie, is the relative good health of the team coming through training camp.

I love it. He's had quite the effect on these guys and deserves a lot of credit for the success of this team.

One of my co-workers was a LBer at UW and trained under him. He said puking during a workout was pretty normal. He also used the "not everyone is meant to play D-1 football" line with them too. Under him all linemen were benching 500lbs if they wanted to play.

I would be very interested to see a burpee done. The motions described don't seem to make sense.

It was really difficult to describe, and I don't think I hit it right. Ask Mike Godsil some time. He'll do one for you.

Burpee-- from standing--Reach hands up over head--bring down and wack stomach with both hands, squat, thrust legs out with hands on ground, do a push-up, bring legs back to squat, stand-repeat. We did them in gym all the time. 25 will do you good.

Sounds like the old 6 count push up we used to have to do in middle school PE class.

From Wikipedia:
Super-burpee
The super-burpee is just like the burpee with a push-up and jump added, although it is usually done starting from a standing position.

Start standing, in a light jog in place
touch the ground in a squat position
Jump clear of the ground, bringing your knees up to your chest.
land in a squat position, jump feet out to push up position.
do a push up
Jump feet forward to a squatting position just like in a squat thrust.
(optional: stand, light jog in place)
repeat many times

Reading about burpees makes me tired.

I'd rather just have a Slurpee.

known on my HS wrestling team as "squat-thrusts"

killers.

used as both a conditioning drill AND punitive measure.

Godsil said he did 42.

42 reps of 225 would put him up with the best in the NFL combine in just about any year. I think the ATR is 46.

Indeed, oldflame. Mike said the top guy at the NFL combine this year did 40. I didn't have time to research that stat, so I didn't include it because I would have wanted to make sure of that. Mike's explanation for doing so many reps of 225: Well, when it's less than half of your max, then it's not that hard. Or something like that.

How does our linemen corps stack up against the players funneling year in and year out into the NFL. We've put a couple of running backs in the league...with Gillespie on board, is it feasible to expect that some of the linemen from these squads could find time in the NFL?

Just an interesting question to ponder since LU wants to be big time at some point: ND seems to put quarterbacks into the league at a consistent clip; is Liberty's MO going to be funneling Running Backs into the league in the future? Or do we see a day when the LU QB position (and others) will put regular players into the league?
