That's exactly what I was thinking, mallet. Wisconsin & Iowa are trying to dry out right now and the Dells area was hit particularly hard.
Cheerbren should have some ideas on Minnesota beyond the iconic mall.
The Black Hills are actually a rather lengthy drive west but I agree that the Badlands & Mt. Rushmore are my favorites up that way.
If you are heading up I-35 I highly recommend eating barbecue in KC just about anywhere. That way you can compare your NC roots to my favorite style.

A Boundary Waters excursion is just what you need.

I've been there...cool excursion, but not worthy of making a long, out of the way, trip for. If you are reasonably close...worth stopping in.

henry gale is correct. also the fact that the place is an absolute dump now is disconcerting...

What is in St. Cloud? Stillwater, MN is fun to see. Are you going alone? The dells are doing ok and that is always fun. We have the Star Wars exhibit at the Science Museum. We do have many lakes and water stuff to rent and fishing to do. Are you camping or doing hotels? Duluth is great to see and spend time at Lake Superior - which is freezing but a great experience to swim in. The north shore is beautiful also. ValleyFair is our local amusement park closer to St. Cloud than the cities.
