Tim Russert, NBC journalist and political heavyweight host of "Meet the Press," has died after collapsing at NBC's Washington news bureau, a source said. He was 58 years old.

Russert, who rose from the inside world of politics where he was former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo's press secretary and one-time chief of staff to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, was able to successfully cross over to political journalism and rise to become one of its leading lights.

His death even made the front page headline in the Lynchburg fishwrap, even more important than the local Bateaux Festival:

I am so sad about this. I loved watching him. And I liked that he really made an effort to be objective and still tough and still very polite and civil to his guests.

He was really good at explaining things in an ultimately clear manner - with his white board (we'll never forget it) and his red state/blue state descriptions. I will miss him and his commentary in this election and future ones too.

This really is a shame... Rush Limbaugh put it best: Russert was as close to an objective journalist as there is out there today. Always a professional, always a class act.
