I'm a big Conan fan. Even though there is some changes that would need to be made
for him to fit in at 11:35, I don't think it's anything as drastic as people think. We can
probably say goodbye to Triumph The Insult Comic Dog and the Masturbating Bear, but
the rest of Conan's material, IMHO, is a perfect fit for 11:30.
Here's the problem. Jay Leno used to be hilarious in the same way we think of Letterman & Conan in that edgy sort of way, but now he's not because he's had to go corporate with the Tonight Show gig. Conan's probably going to be forced to go corporate, too, but I don't think he's going to be able to thrive in that environment, where he has to cow-tow to celebrities and such (seriously -- see if you can see the interview Conan did with Courtney Thorne-Smith where Norm MacDonald is sitting right next to her and just tearing her a new one. That's classic Conan... and it'll never happen when he gets the Tonight Show gig.)
I used to love Conan, but I think his schtick is getting tired. He really hasn't been the same since Andy left. I think he should leave the late night biz and become head writer at SNL... at least he could make that show funny again.
Honestly... I think Letterman is past his prime -- but if you're looking for someone edgy and yet, able to sell out -- that person is probably Letterman nowadays. However, as we've seen during the strike when he had writers and the best guests... he couldn't deliver the goods (ratings). So whatever. I don't like Jon Stewart but he'd be good in that NBC role, too. Actualy, you know who'd be perfect in the "more corny than funny and sells out to the corporate brass" role that is the Tonight show? Ryan Seacrest.
