UVa pep band plays on 5 years after ouster
By Brian McNeill

University of Virginia student Kevin Binswanger dropped his trumpet and picked up the microphone.
“You sir, in the front. Have you accepted Jefferson into your heart?” he preached. “You cannot be saved by blind obedience to authority; this leads you to the fiery pits of hell!
“Only by embracing the word of Jefferson and by practicing student self-governance and rebellion can you find salvation in the world to come,” he continued. “Accept Jefferson into your heart and you will be saved from eternal torment in the fires of hell!”
Binswanger then picked up his trumpet and joined his fellow members of the University of Virginia Pep Band in a rousing rendition of “Hot Hot Hot.”
And I'd place good money that the following guy was a FlameFan ....
The band also plays at club sports, most notably at rugby matches and hockey games. At this year’s hockey game against Liberty University, UVa’s pep band mocked the other team so much that when Liberty took the lead, its fans yelled at the pep band, “What now, band nerds?”

If Matshark was there, I'll place my bets on him. If not...errr, HMO???

Nay... it was not I. I'd have asked him where he wanted his instrument... down his throat or up his... err... i mean, i would NEVER insinuate something like that...
Although for supposedly being the best and brightest of Mr. Jefferson's darling kiddos, the pep banders aren't too bright... You'd think they'd get the hint after 5 years... no? they must be liberals... Maybe TTL was in the UVA pep band.. he can tell us...
*disclaimer: the above line was in no way a derogatory swipe at the intelligence, gender, college orientation, life skills, ability to function in public, common sense or ability to fill out a voting ballot correctly of any and all groups or individuals referred to herein, either named TTL or otherwise*

"Get the hint?" They're just kids that want to play and have fun. UVA's boosters got offended at something and had them shut down. If I was them I would keep playing too.

And so the LUnatics were born...
Oh, we are talking about UVa, not LU.

Pretty much.

yeah, but the issue is not their supporting the UVA teams. you still cant treat other teams that way... that's rep city at LU. the issue isnt their being fans and wanting to play. its their being utter (noun)holes about it...
students at LU can't even say "you suck" during the "Hey" song... (that caused quite the uproar from the administration) let alone mock an entire state and spew blasphemous and quite possibly highly offensive religious mockery from a bull horn directed at fans...
UVA pep band = LUnatics? Not even close!

You obviously haven't seen other marching bands across the country. The routinely make fun of the teams they're playing. It's all in fun. They were making fun of them in fun way to get some laughs. That's no different than "Hey Colin She's Hot" or "Henry Hunt Took Ballet" - both things we've done in the stands.

look, im not gonna argue whether WVA might be a little oversensitive, the point is that the pep band was repeatedly warned and crossed the line, and was banned by the administration. not only that, but somebody donated $23.5M to do away with them. hmm..somebody must have made some enemies.
There is a big difference b/w the LUnatics working WITH the administration, and the UVA pep band being BANNED by their administration. I think anyone will agree with me that in order to get yourself banned at a PUBLIC university, you either have be so outrageous and publicly insulting and bad for the university that they can't sweep it under the rug, or a christian.
its one thing to be making fun of other teams in good fun. obviously UVA's pep band crossed that line numerous times and was banned for it. i dont even understand how you can support that. they did away with the "pep band", and added a marching band. I mean, you dont have school administrators coming up to you at events and telling you that what you are doing is counter to the schools academic goals and policies and telling you to leave. quite the contrary, you have school administrators listening to your advice on graduation speakers to have (and getting national news recognition for it apparently...lol).
after all the work you've done to make LUnatics a good fan organization both for the students and the university, i dont see how you could in anyway condone or support an organization that intentionally is as offensive as possible.

Oh how little you know. We've had plenty of people that work at games come up to us and tell us we didn't need to do what we were doing, we shouldn't be standing, and all of that. If these kids at UVA want to play at games and play music, then let them. Did they cross the line a few times? Sure. They're no longer an official part of the school though, so let em do what they want. If they're not hurting anything, why stop them?

have to agree with SJ here. let them do what they want. after the tire bowl years ago in charlotte, the pep band mocked west virginia and did a parody about inbreeding which the gov. of wva demanded an apology. that officially ended the band being sanctioned by UVA. Carl smith a huge donor to UVA had already put in place the funds to get the marching band going before the complete ban and it was the best thing they could have done. the pep band was funny, but many times went way overboard, and im glad they are done. let them do what they want at a non-sanctioned event.

look, im not talking about "christians" that get all offended if we aren't cheering for the other team too. i mean, God forbid people get so excited about games that they standup. I'm sure they think that all of nascar nation is going to hell everytime Dale Jr. takes the lead. we aren't talking Pensacola Communist College or BJ University. (use ur imagination on that one...) I mean if those people had their way, NO ONE would cheer for any team at any game. heck, we might just outlaw sports altogether and go sing hymns for a few hours instead. comparing the two situations is just rediculous.
im talking about stuff so bad that people who dont give a flying---- about "baby jeebus" get offended about it. (and yes, "baby jeebus" is apparently a favorite term among those that hate christianity... who knew?)
do i have an issue with them running around in bare feet and making fun of west virginia, no. im sure it was quite funny to everyone NOT from west virginia. (we are talking after all about the people that burn cars and light trashcans on fire whenever they get a big win. yes... lets go trash our OWN campus after we win. im sure the intelligence level of the state overall is not being disputed here...) the point is that there is a place where that stuff crosses the line, and if they cant figure it out for themselves, then its the university's job to do it. the university has a right to ban activity that they feel paints the university in a bad light. obviously the pep band has an EXTENSIVE history of doing offensive stuff, and the university got tired of it. period.
there's no overbearing RA's or LUPD telling them they are being bad christians or anything like that. they are being intentionally and patently offensive, and there's no room for that in sports. as the most visible person in charge of LU's visible fan base, im surprised you dont see it that way, especially after all of the work you've done to make sure the LUnatics are within the bounds of both sportsmanship and fan hood, as well as working with the administration. the UVA guys are the antithesis of everything the LUnatics are supposed to be.

There were many, many reasons why the pep band got the boot other than the WV game, that just gave the admin the "right" to do it.

I am in agreement with ( insert someone's name here ) on this one.
My only brush with the "band" was a number of years ago, calling a hockey game in Charlottesville. Unplugging
my equipment, yelling profanities near my crowd mics..yeah, that was a night I'd like to forget.
Mind you, this was right after the whole Tinky Winky thing..some UVA player got a hat trick (we still killed them),
and they threw Tinky Winky dolls on the ice.
Stay classy, UVA.
