what do you think about drunk driving laws?

I know of people with multiple DUI's but they are still allowed to drive. I, quite frankly, don't get this. Why do we continually allow people to get away with driving under the influence. I hear about people who makes jokes about driving home drunk and never getting caught. I just can't figure out why we don't have stricter penaties for this. I don't think people would be making jokes about it if, after one offense their license was suspended. After two offenses, they face a huge fine, or jail time and a much longer suspension. Why do lawmakers play around with this crap. DUI's are needlessly killing people and we have drivers who just don't care. Part of the problem is also restaurants and bars allowing people to get drunk. I believe in most states that's also illegal but nothing is done about it. I think a 50,000 dollar fine would make restaurants think twice about letting people drink too much.

What do you guys think? I really think much stricter laws are needed, like after 3 dui's a 5 or 10 year license suspension not to mention jail time.

I don't know about in VA, but in NC the laws are basically very close to what you suggest. Your license is suspended after just one offense.

NC also has stricter laws about gathering and presenting evidence. If the arresting officer administers the breathalizer, the case will usually be thrown out.

That's not true. Breathalizer is almost always accepted in court.
