Of course. If you play the line. Like tomorrow's Carolina-Tech game, Carolina is favored by 13.5 points as of right now. You can just bet that Tech will lose by less than 13.5. If they lose by 13 or less or happen to win, you win. You'd probably win around $90 for every $100 you bet. So if you bet $100 and win you would then have $190. You don't have to pick the winner, you can almost always play the points spread.

The other option is the money line where you are betting on the actual winner of the game. You don't want to make this bet on an underdog unless you definitely think they'll win. The payoff for underdogs can be enticing but the risk is usually pretty high. This is usually reserved for games that are going to be closer or games where either team has a legitimate shot to win such as baseball or hockey. Take a look at tomorrows Calgary-LA NHL game the money line is Calgary (-145) and LA (+125). A negative number represents how much you have to bet to win $100 (you must bet $145). A positive number means for every $100 you bet you win that amount (you bet $100 to win $125).

Great, just got back from my gamblers anonymous meeting and see this question:

The answer is yes. In fact there are several ways to bet on a 'loser' and still win.
1. Point spreads. As explained above if Team A is "giving" 10 points then Vegas is saying they believe that Team A will win by more then 10. If Team A wins, BUT only does so by 9 or less, then whoever bet on Team A loses their bet and whoever bet on Team B wins.
2. Over/Under. GREAT fun. You can bet the total number of points scored. You can do this by either team or by both combined. Say the "Over/Under" for the IU/MSU game is 175. That means that the score of both teams COMBINED will equal 175 or more. You bet whether you think that number will be higher or lower. This is fun in games where you know basically what team is going to win and that they will cover the spread, yet will still keep you in the game.

Depending on what type of underdogs you bet....betting all favorties won't net you as much as better heavy share of dogs in those 8 bets.
