With the pending re-entry and impact of the U.S. government spy satellite,
(http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5h7ao ... wD8UFVHR80)SKYLAB came to my mind.
I remember being a 9 year old in Southern California and hearing all the adults panic about it. I was scared to death, especially when scientists kept saying it might come down in California. They kept saying it was the size of a house, and I could just picture it squishing mine. Does anyone else remember the panic?

For your young pups, here is some SKYLAB info.

I remember Taco Bell putting a giant target in the Pacific Ocean and if a piece of the Russian Mir space station hit it, then everyone in America would get a free taco.

I remember both Mir and Skylab coming down. Seems like there was some program to use the shuttle to move Skylab back to a stable orbit, but the shuttle program took too long to develop (by several years).

I also remember standing out in the front yard with binoculars trying to see the joint Apollo/Soyuz mission.
