Drug-resistant staph found to be passed in gay sex

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A drug-resistant strain of potentially deadly bacteria has moved beyond the borders of U.S. hospitals and is being transmitted among gay men during sex, researchers said on Monday.
They said methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, is beginning to appear outside hospitals in San Francisco, Boston, New York and Los Angeles.
Sexually active gay men in San Francisco are 13 times more likely to be infected than their heterosexual neighbors, the researchers reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
"Once this reaches the general population, it will be truly unstoppable," said Binh Diep, a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco who led the study. "That's why we're trying to spread the message of prevention."
According to chemical analyses, bacteria are spreading among the gay communities of San Francisco and Boston, the researchers said.
"We think that it's spread through sexual activity," Diep said.

Unprotected sex results in a staph infection. So what else is new? Unprotected sex has been resulting in staff infections for years.
Yes, I'm 12 years old.

(laughing only at the name of the journal relating to the subject matter)

If it were just staph, that might not be news. But, this is the drug-resistant strain (MRSA) and these are the first signs of it of being transmitted sexually. It being of this particular strain is the key to the news. A drug-resistant bacteria being spread sexually means there's the potential for a huge boom in the infection rate (like HIV/AIDS), and thus a huge new problem for the medical community.
It's not insignificant.

No, it's both.

They're just much more likely to contract it, which is why it's showing up in that population first. Most STD's do.

FYI: for the GENEREAL PUBLIC, the first line of defense for this type of infection is as simple as hand-washing.
make sure, esp when using public facilities- eating at restaurants, etc- you use soap and water EVERY TIME.
as far as unprotected sex- well, that's just stupid these days- no matter WHAT your preference.

Maybe I should have added a rimshot to the end of my post. That joke went down faster than a gay dude at a MRSA party.
