Roads are ICY...especially bridges and overpasses. 460 was a skating rink. I made it in...but barely.

3/4 of our class was here just no sign of Dr. Cohu.
What are we doing about exams?

wow, now that was fun. a 10 minute drive to work took me 30. At one point, both lanes stopped to watch this big truck that counldn't make it past a bridge with a gentle incline on it. Listening to the radio there are pile ups all over town. It's pretty entertaining to listen to.

I was fish tailing like crazy going 20mph.
Prof just e-mailed us from his Blackberry on the side of the road and we can get ours online. I just have to wait around before I can leave to go home.

That's what we all thought about our exam. Now we're all just sitting around the Hangar with nowhere to go.

Same reason as LU. This one seems to have snuck up on everyone.
I have to be here ASAP, regardless of the weather. Fun, fun.
I saw a small truck flipped in front of Koto on Wards Road this morning and a Jeep that had also flipped on 460 West. It took out an Xterra while it was flipping. Apparently they closed 460 about ten minutes ago. Campbell County Sheriffs were out pacing traffic.

I think LU announced the delay somewhere between 745 and 8 AM...
...will be interesting for all those who had 8 AM exams scheduled for today.
Great coverage by channel 13 on it, too. Accidents everywhere with roads closed "all over the viewing area."

Its pretty much a zoo everywhere. I am talking to a friend of mine who lives off McConville Rd and a number of cars are in the trees outside her window. Heck, I took one step out of my dorm this morning, shot two feet in the air and landed very hard on my backside. A few minutes later walking past the Vines Center I slipped and landed on my hip.

Yes...I am the hard core "keep school open" guy...but that is with snow. Ice is different. I think even a delay until after 12-noon is warranted in this case.

I'm starting to think you're just clumsy BJ. How many stories have you told us about you falling?

Ahh, this is what I miss about Lynchburg.
First snow or ice is always a disaster. Call out the National Guard.
This is why, even if you are a good driver, its not a great idea to drive in Lynchburg when it snows. Lots of Hills+Bad Drivers=Lots of accidents.

Actually, this IS pretty bad as it was a sneak attack.

yeah, the slop that we get here is different than something you get more north of here. Plus this is just plain ice. In most other places people would just not go on the road.

Too many for me to count...I will readily admit that I have the coordination of a brick wall so these stories are fairly common and I have no problem laughing at myself about it

I'm staying in my nice warm apartment until later today. Everyone who needs to be out this morning, drive safely.

i agree, for once i really shouldn't have driven to work today and the conditions suck and i from the north. Rumors around work here for the people who have shown up so far say there may even be a 20 car pileup on lakeside....i saw at least 3 wrecks on my way to work.

left my apartment on coffee road at 8am. Sat on 501 until 915. Made it to work, downtown at 1015. OUT of control. For once, it wasn't just crazy lynchburgers over reacting to the weather, it truly was bad!
be safe everyone.
and BJ, maybe stay indoors until it all melts, wouldn't want you breaking a bone

This was not the same as the normal Lynchburg freak out that happens with snow. It was ice. Nothing but. And no one got any warning. VDOT hadn't salted the roads and everyone was leaving for work/school like normal. Between 6 and 8 am there were wrecks on nearly every major exit in Lynchburg. Between 9 and 10 am people were stuck in traffic waiting for roads to re-open.
Naaaaasty.

I guess I picked the wrong time to run out of food. Looks like I'll be braving the elements in search of lunch today... then later for work.

Actually, I think LU was the last to make a decision. All Lynchburg schools, (colleges, elementary, etc...) had decided prior to 8:00am what action they were taking. I called my boss at 7:58am to let her know I would come in later, because at that time, LU still had not announced.
My wife is an elementary school teacher & she found out around 7:00am what her school planned to do. That's efficiency.
