XBOX 360 Problem

My 360 Premium just started doing something strange. It's been going on for about a week. In the middle of a game it will make a high pitch scratching noise then the screen gets fuzzy and locks up. Sometimes it will happen after a few minutes and sometimes right at the boot sequence. I have never dropped the machine and it's been in the same spot for 6 months or so. Today I tried to play and it won't even get to the dashboard half the time. I keep powering on/off but no luck. Any suggestions? BTW, I don't have the rings of death...yet.
EDIT: Just powered it on and got the 3 red rings. Guess I'm screwed...

I've never heard of this. I sure hope you've still got some warranty left. My best guesses are always overheating but if it's right a boot up, that doesnt make sense.

You should be releaved. Since they're still fixing it free of charge. You're lucky it didn't happen in about a year or so when you'd be stuck with it.

Problem solved.
No, seriously, that sucks...especially with NCAA Football 08 right now, College Hoops 2k8 & Assassin's Creed coming soon. It's prime gaming time. Best of luck.

Recommendation:
#1) don't put your XBOX on the carpet. The fan can suck up little carpet fibers, from what I've been told.
#2) lay it flat, as opposed to vertically. The thing scratched up one of my discs when I did. Fortunately, the people at Gamestop are cool and let me replace it.
I dealt with an XBOX 360 problem for some time. It was really frustrating, until one day customer support told me to send it in. I did; they gave me a new one, and i haven't had problems ever since.

Was looking through the box and found the receipt from Best Buy where I had purchased the product replacement. I took it back today and they swapped it for a new one (I kept my hard drive). The new one came with Marvel Alliance and Forza Motorsport 2 which I didn't have so I'm now glad that it broke!
