Anyone notice that we have a Kay Yow registered on this board?
Isn't NC State's women's bball coach named Kay Yow?
While I doubt she'd be on here, I just found it interesting.

With the bigger schools in women's Division I, you might never see a better technical display of team basketball. A lot of ball movement with more v-cuts, slip screens, down screens, etc...Of course it doesn't have the flash of the men's game, but for a basketball purist, it's neat to watch.

We've talked about this before. This is something that wbb fans have made up and it just isn't true. The only difference between the two, is that women just aren't as athletic. If you gave men 20 pound cement shoes, you'd see the same game.

I think you are wrong, LUconn. I see many similarities in the women's game...
...to grass growing...and paint drying.

Just a Kay Yow fan here. Wonderful lady. Attend church with her and have been involved in working her camps for several years. She is a strong christian and shares her faith.
I'm a former Lady Flame. I played at LU long before they put money into hiring quality coaches. I've enjoyed watching the program's success over the last decade.

How is coach yow in her cancer battle?? i had the opportunity to meet her when i lived in raleigh and she is a great lady.

She is doing well. Not on chemo now as long as her tumor count stays down. Her energy level is back, but she has a few issues as a result of chemo.
Her battle with cancer isn't over but seems to be manageable for the time being.

will she still be coaching?

Yes. She was very active in the last camp I worked in August. She actually was on the court working and demonstrating drills with campers. She was not strong enough to do that earlier in the summer.
I haven't seen her in a couple of weeks. I haven't heard of any changes and I spoke with some of her staff on Sunday. So I'm assuming she is coaching as planned. She has a very young team mostly freshmen and sophomores. They are going to need her!

Thanks for clearing up the ID name questions. And any former Lady Flame is always welcome here.

While everyone has their own opinion, try reffing it & see how slow it is. While not the speed of the men's, it's faster than you think, especially when on the floor.
From a ref's point-of-view, it does tend to be a little more technical. In the men's game, athleticism can compensate when need be. It's rare in the women's game to see athleticism take over.
If you don't like women's b-ball, that's fine. I can see where it has it's faults. I'd rather watch the men's games myself, but we can't completely dismiss women's college b-ball.

haha no its not....whether i'm reffing, sitting in the front row, or watching it on tv, its slow and boring basketball...
i have nothing against womens basketball, just like i have nothing against sailing....it just doesnt' entertain me one lick....
will that change? possilby, i have 2 daughters and while the 2 yr old can swing a golf club like noones business, perhaps she will want to be a balla like her old pop...i have no problem with that...perhaps i'll even learn to enjoy it...
oh and from a standpoint of reffing i just called a ref i know that coaches mens and women juco games....he said that womens is far easier to ref because its slower...his words...and he has a daughter that plays...

That's why I said it's not as fast as men's. It is slower, no doubt. It just seems that some people think its as slow as shuffle board.
By the way, tell your daughter to keep swinging the club. You'll be set for life. She can be on the Tour until she can't walk anymore. You'll be like Earl Woods...just on the LPGA side.

I like watching WBB because i like the way they execute more than MBB (been watching WBB for years). There are lots of great athletes out there for WBB. I like watching teams who transition alot. LU is more of a half court oriented team. A lot of top 25 teams have speed and they move up and down the floor at a fast pace. To me watching WBB is not boring. For those who like mbb more would think that wbb is boring to them.

Somewhat back on topic. Interesting six degrees of separation:
Deborah Yow (of the Yow sister coaching trio) is the AD over at University of Maryland and according to several articles (from a quick google search) reveal that she is a no nonsense type of administrator (and given the turnaround for Maryland athletics under her tenure, she has her supporters and her detractors, too.)
Apparently she is a Liberty Alumna by way of a graduate degree (distance education) in Counseling.
1.
http://www.accsports.com/archives/classics/mdyow.jsp From a 1999 article.
Maryland's Debbie Yow
September 17, 1999
Four years ago, Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow took over a $24 million program riddled with debt, failure and indifference. Today, Yow oversees a department defined by better fundraising, improved graduation rates and substantial on-field success. Along the way, her firings, reassignments and no- nonsense approach have earned her more than a few enemies...
...As a student at East Carolina in the late 1960s, Yow said she studied little, used marijuana and LSD and flunked out.
...After a year working at fastfood restaurants, Yow enrolled at Elon (N.C.) College, where her older sister, Kay, coached the women's basketball team. Debbie played basketball and, in 1974, earned a degree in English. [Cider will like that.]
Her career in major college sports began in 1976, when she became Kentucky's women's basketball coach. After compiling a 79-40 record there, she held coaching and administrative jobs at three other universities, and in 1990 was named Saint Louis University's athletic director...
A Future In Counseling?
A little-known fact about Maryland's athletic director: She has prepared for a second career.
Yow has earned a master's degree in counseling from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., and a doctorate in Christian counseling from Louisiana Baptist in Shreveport, La. Both degrees were obtained through "distance education"; that is, she did not regularly attend classes on those campuses.

Deborah A. Yow is in the 14th year of her outstanding tenure as director of athletics at the University of Maryland, a tenure that has seen unprecedented success and achievement in Maryland athletics. In Yow's 13-plus years at Maryland, the Terrapins have won a remarkable 15 national championships and graduated student-athletes at an enviable rate as Maryland athletics has soared to sustained new heights among the nation's elite intercollegiate athletic programs.
The comprehensive success of Terrapin athletics under Debbie Yow's leadership is a clear and compelling testimony of her values of excellence, teamwork and accountability.
Likewise, her prior election to the presidency of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics is an indication of the wide respect with which she is regarded among its 6,100 members representing 1,600 colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada.
She has been honored by Street and Smith's Sports Business Journal as one of the 20 most influential people in intercollegiate athletics and she has received the Carl Maddox Sport Management Award presented by the United States Sports Academy for excellence in athletics administration.
The most recent achievements of Maryland athletics are exceptional:
>Maryland captured a remarkable six national championships during the past two seasons.
>Maryland was selected by U.S. News & World Report as one of the Top 20 athletic programs in the nation (for overall quality and competitive excellence).
>Additionally, Maryland is one of only nine universities to win the National Championship in football and men's basketball (Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State, UCLA, Syracuse, Michigan State, Arkansas, California and Florida) and is one of only three universities in the nation to win National Championships in men's basketball, women's basketball and football. Stanford and UCLA are the only other NCAA Division I institutions to achieve that mark.

Her two sisters are also active in collegiate sports. Deborah Yow is currently the Athletic Director at the University of Maryland, College Park, [2] and Susan Yow coached women's basketball at University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Kansas State University, Drake University, East Tennessee State University, and Providence College. Susan has also served as an assistant coach to the WNBA teams, the Charlotte Sting and the Cleveland Rockers.[3] In 2006, Susan was named as an assistant coach with the Minnesota Lynx, but resigned with head coach Suzie McConnell Serio on July 23, 2006.[4]
