EVERY FRIDAY AFTERNOON in Moscow, Idaho, a strange commotion overruns Main Street. A stream of young men and women parade down the sidewalk, wearing black academic gowns that billow and flap as they walk. Some pore over Latin textbooks or thumb flashcards of ancient Greek vocabulary, nearly tripping at the curb. They are students at New St. Andrews College on their way to disputatio, a weekly assembly held in a movie theater downtown. The college itself has no room large enough to accommodate all 150 students at once: it occupies a single unassuming brick building a few blocks away, one that a stranger might mistake for the refurbished husk of an old savings and loan. Passers-by on their way to the Pita Pit or Hodgins Drug barely give the students a second glance. Not a few residents, however, have fought hard to keep them out of downtown. Founded in 1994 by the elders of a fast-growing and radically conservative church, New St. Andrews represents a new philosophy of evangelical education — one that has inspired a national movement and makes local liberals nervous.
This curriculum is a “reformation in higher education,” says Roy Atwood, the college president. “The last thing we wanted to be was a Liberty University or a Patrick Henry. We are not interested in political takeover.”

And the last thing they'll be is a successful school if this guy knows his subjects as well as he knows what Liberty is.

I'm sorry, I know you are not suppose to judge a book by its cover, but look at the people and how they are dressed. I've got a feeling this is a VERY legalistic type group/school and I can't imagine it is relevant to its community.

The one thing I have liked to see with Liberty is that the mere mention of it does not cause people to cringe as much anymore. Unlike Bob Jones, PCC, and other very radically right schools. Just my two cents. I have nothing against those schools, but when or if they call out Liberty for being too radical they just prove how irrelevant they truly have become/are. Liberty has done a good job at sticking to the core of Christian doctrine, but letting go of many of the poorly created/no longer necessary rules (I know they still have several in existence).

you've got to admit that that guy's argyle sweater vest is pretty sweet though. I've got a similar one.

No way would I want to sit outside with a sweater and tie on (although I agree his outfit looks cool). I know I had to do it at Liberty (they dropped the tie rule the year after I left...I think in the Fall of 2000), but it just looks uber uncomfortable. I'm just glad that Liberty modernized their dress code a little bit. I hope they never look like the people in the picture above again.

Personally I don't see why colleges like that feel the need to insult us for having an expanded curriculum that includes business management and the like and not just courses on cliassical greek and philosophy. I mean, the whole purpose of college is to help prepare you for a career, right?

In 14 years they've amassed only 150 students somewhere in Idaho and the NY Times seems fit to print a story about them. Without the swipe at LU or the quote about moving away from the Moral Majority, this story doesn't even make the local wrap in Idaho.
