what do you folks consider to be "essentials" (using the term loosely) for any dorm room?

-Video Game System
-Little Debbie Snacks (preferably fudge rounds or oatmeal cream pies...they hit the spot while studying or playing video games)

Those two things alone allowed me to survive a couple of years in the dorm...

as tempting as it may be and as much as you are hoping it will bring you friends, do not...i repeat, DO NOT have the biggest TV on the hall....you will have to shoo people out of your room nightly....this is especially true if you also have alot of movies....keep it to yourself...

do whatever you can to have only 1 roommate....its so much better even if your roommate is a new english liberal...

so true....freshmen year my roommate had the biggest tv on the hall (first semester) and a huge movie collection, and everybody was either in our room to watch a movie or bothering him to borrow a movie...he hated it....but the following semester someone brought a huge screen tv and then our room wasn't cool anymore

agree w/ the Ramen Noodles (brick or cup), would add Oreos to the list.

and Tastycakes- but you hicks wouldn't know about them.

Back in the day- it was a walkman, or tape player- subsitute mp3 player or CD player- whichever. gotta have tunes.

mini-fridge is good, hotplate not necessary; you CAN reheat pizza on an iron. Just don't press a white shirt afterwards. (learned that one the hard way)

I lived on East...our essentials were a little different...and we loved having large TVs and game systems.

Earplugs that are comfortable to wear for long periods of time and during sleeping. (I recommend these.)

Microwave, mini-fridge (even if there's a common fridge), flip-flops (for the showers in the older dorms) and a FlameFans.com account for when you're bored.

Three polos and a pair of jeans for class.

Sweat pants or gym shorts because that's what you live in any time you're not in class.

PS2 or XBox.

Computer.

Mini fridge.

That's all you need.

Use your roomate's clothes as well! Although, I recommend using your own underwear.

got earplugs covered. get mine free from work and they are wonderful - anything that can prevent me from hearing a running weedeater (and an angry mother ;)) is top notch in my book.

George Foreman Grill, Toaster oven, waffle iron, slow cooker and hot plate. You'll need to keep them safely hidden.

why on earth would you need a waffle iron? I guess a slow cooker would be needed if you're a FACS major

Geesh...even with the comfy A/C you spoiled ones have in your modern dorms, I would think a fan would still be essential for when they crank the heat way up during the winter.

Also, snow boots would be essential....oh, wait...I forgot...we CANCEL school for the smallest dusting with snow flurries...unlike "back in my day..." :oldhag
