New LU Alumni Merchandise

I don't think I've seen this mentioned on here yet, but I got an e-mail one day last week from the alumni department. It was requesting me to complete a survey on what merchandise I would like the most. It was some pretty sweet stuff, hats, sweatshirts, t-shirts, etc. Some good looking stuff too. I'll try to post the link here later.

Yep, I got the same email. I liked it too. Much better than some of the stuff they have had in the past.

I'll be honest, I'm not blown away.
Does anybody like the fierce eagle logo?

It's growing on me--it's better than anything we have now. I'm not a big fan of the current model, looks cartoonish.

Don't get me wrong, some of the items with the clean LU logo don't look bad. It just doesn't blow me away. But the cartoon Eagle looks awful IMHO. I'd rather have Proto's flaming eagle.

I couldn't get a good look at that logo.

Also, couldn't get a crisp look at the bird, but this script is decent:

Here's a closer look at the new eagle. I'd rather have the rolling up his sleeve fighting eagle.

The problem with that bird is that the same logo is used at many schools...and if I am going to buy something "LU", it is going to be something unique.

agree with Sly....awful. I know you can't please everybody, but this is a very weak attempt IMHO.

I responded to the email and I was pretty harsh. I don't care how trendy it is right now, I don't like using browns and pinks on LU branded gear. IMHO, we don't have enough brand recognition to use anything except for school colors, blacks, grays and neutrals. I also thought that most of the stuff looked like it was selected out of an embroiderer's stock catalog. That's pretty lame, I think.
Maybe I'm too picky, but I didn't care for any of it really.

The reason we had to change the fighting Eagle logo is because the old one is clip art. We don't want someone else using the same logo. Plus, since this is from the alumni office, we are not authorized to use the Prototype Eagle logo as athletics wants it for their merchandise.
The new fighting eagle logo is a design by another guy & me. If you don't like it, that's fine. I'm a big boy & I actually welcome constructive criticism. I will gladly listen to your thoughts for changes. It's not exactly "official" yet.
As for the merchandise, some I designed, some was designed by two other people here in our office. Looking at our demographics, our largest amount of alumni are in the 40 and under range. We are also competing with the bookstore, so a lot of the stuff has to fit today's trends.
You guys did exactly what we wanted. This stuff has not been printed; just mocked up & sent in an email to see the feedback. There is a lot of pressure on the alumni office for this to work & they want to find the stuff that sells. So make sure you tell everyone that got the email to do it.

good
people will tell you what they really think on a message board, whereas in public they'd probably just be polite.
unless they're from the northeast.

Aren't both of you promoting the same school? Isn't one of the important jobs of the Alumni Assoc. to keep Aulmni interested in the athletic Dept. so they might pony up some Cash?
I'm LOST!

Athletics is sinking their money in their merchandise, & will not be sold by the alumni. If the alumni office sold the same stuff, we would be competing with the athletic office. I agree, I think it should be a joint effort........but, it is what it is right now.

While I'm not a big fan of this logo, I do appreciate you trying to incorporate the eagle head that is used on the license plate. That guy seemed to just come out of nowhere a few years back.

Sorry for being so harsh, blwall1416. But I guess I'm like many of the Old Hags on here who still feel the eagle mascot has been crammed down our throats. Since this is alumni-directed apparel, is there any thought to using the old school eagle silhouette that used as the school image in the '80s & '90s? If a cartoonish logo is in being sought then how about a take on this famous logo from Thrush Exhaust:
Perhaps the woodpecker is converted to an eagle with flames flying off of it. OK, that may be a terrible idea but I'm just thinking out loud this morning.
Honestly though I have to admit I would prefer something that is uniquely Liberty. The LU logo looks clean but there are so many LUs out there (who coincidentally all seem to have red or blue as their primary color) that it needs further distinction.
The logo on page 9 is not bad for a stand alone.

Ill say one thing, i dont' like the logo, but i do like your attitude about it ( and yes i am from the northeast

). I also could just have a biased opinion because i got to add my two cents when proto designed the athletic logo. I didn't get the original e-mail sent to the Alumni but im wondering if people returning for homecoming( which im guessing is where a ton of your sales are going to be from) are going to understand why we have multiple logos?

athletic logos are often different from both academic and school logos. I thought we had all of them set though. Flame eagle thing is the athletic, book on fire is the the academic and the "LU" varsity letters is the school logo.

What I don't get is the fact that we in the media are given a LU style guide to follow, and the school doesn't follow it themselves.
http://www.liberty.edu/index.cfm?PID=11711
It doesn't make any sense to me at all. If the school continues to be inconsistent in their logos there will be bo real "Brand" to speak of. It will be so watered down noone will know what is what. I don't care about color schemes as much as some, but the logos and lettering should be set in stone.[/url]

I was part of the team that developed the style guide. However, you know at Liberty, once someone gets an idea, they want to see it and.....you know what I mean. The fighting eagle was asked about since they found out the fighting "chicken" rolling his sleeves up was clip art.
As far as using the Prototype Flames logo, it can be used for athletics or school spirit. However, we have been asked by athletics to not use this for our merchandise, so we don't compete with theirs. In fact, I had to fight to use the word "Liberty Flames" (see the female retro jersey shirt). They wanted us to only make merchandise that said "Liberty University".
The old eagle head (80's & 90's) has been officially done away with. Although, if you get a class ring encrusted, it still has that logo, which makes no sense.
By the way, no offense taken. (AND, I'm from the SOUTH!!!!)

For some reason, the named sounded like "a film for grown-ups".
