I think it's kind of lame, but we'll have our own campus version of the Espy's.

Just one day after the ESPYs are awarded, Liberty fans will have the opportunity to select the best athletes and moments from the past year in Flames athletics. Voting for the inaugural Sparkys will commence Monday, with the first of five categories, Biggest Win.

I think I should get one for being the very first sparky and having the pay a late christian service fee for doing it.

First off, how much is a late Christian service fee, cause I got a feeling I'll have to pay it.

Second, two threads about it in the Lynchburg Life.

I'm going to ask the same question in this thread. I think it's perfectly fine if they intended for this to but like the Dundy's (The Office) or some sort of comedy relief for the summer, although I'm worried that's not what they want. I'm afraid they want this to end up being a prestigious award and if thats the case this is a awful name for the awards.

Again if their intentions are for this to be some sort of banquet 10 years from now then A. it's at the wrong time and B. you cant take them serious with that name.

People said the same thing about the word ESPY several years ago. Also you think Grammy and Emmy are good names? Not really but they stuck it out and now you don't even think about it. I think it is a good name.

I like Sparky (since I happened to come up with the name despite getting torched on the old board for it).
No wonder Scar likes the name!

Scar, were you also consulted when Barber & company picked out the new costume for our Sparky mascot last year?

They didn't consult me on the outfit Jim. In fact they didn't consult me on the name either but I am on record in 3 different places as wanting that to be the name: 1st on paper in a presentation to Dr. Godwin, Dr Falwell and Dr. Borek back in early 2004. Secondly on the air on Flames Television when they officially named the Eagle LU and got him his latest costume before the name change. And lastly on the old Firehouse board where I got torched by everyone for even suggesting it. I didn't get a phone call the night before the unveiling of Sparky or anything but I was happy for the change.

Ok the Spaky's have over 300 votes so far and football over Chuck So is winning slightly. I think that is wrong but I only get one vote. Football over Chuck South? That was not that big of a deal in context. I dare say if there was a spread that Liberty was probably favored at home. I vote for the track team but I think the football win was the least of the 5 nominees. I thought we were better than them and should have won the game. They were way over rated.

I'll be honest, I voted for the ladies' victory up in C-Ville. But I agree that the Chuck South victory wasn't that big of a deal. Now if we had pulled out the victory over CCU we would be talking about a completely different story.

I voted for the softball win against Michigan as my number 1 but the track team and the womens big win were certainly worthy of respect. The softball win was the 3rd highest ranked team that an LU sports team beat followed by the soccer win vs Wake and the baseball win vs Clemson so that is why I voted for it. The womens win was a shining moment in an otherwise subpar season for them so I did not vote for that one. The track team won the IC4A in the past and placed 2nd place on numerous seasons so it was sort of a return to greatness that they are accustomed to anyway. The football win vs Chuck South is no big deal and I would have been disappointed if we lost and so would most people on this board (I would hope so). Chuck South had a long winning streek dating back to last year but most of the wins were against division 2 teams with only the Citadel and Coastal wins worthy of any kind of recognition. No way should that win be considered big but expected.

I had to vote for the ladies' game in Charlotteville, because I was there in attendance and their hall of fame coach had absolutely no defense that could stop Megan Frazee, who poured in 38 points in that historic game--the first time UVa had ever lost a game in their new Jones Arena. The UVa players, coaching staff, and especially their fans were absolutely shocked and dumbfounded by our win over them. Congrats to Coach Green and his players.

I voted for the Men's Track winning the IC4A. Maybe most folks don't know enough about track to realize the magnitude of that achievement in terms of mid-Atlantic/NE track. That is much more impressive than a one-shot win over a ranked opponent in the other team sports. A win in track requires a tremendous amount of depth.

Umm, we're voting for Biggest Win of the Season here...yes, our men's bball teams may have beaten Saint Mary's School for the Blind, Podunk University and State Teaching School by margins of 100, but other than that they didn't do anything significant.

Anyway, with 360 votes football is currently leading with 26%, followed by women's basketball with 25%. I had to vote for women's bball on this one...its not often you take down an ACC team on its home turf. But it was a hard choice though, as I also wanted to vote for track and softball.

Good point about the mens hoops team. I guess the only respectable thing that they did was give Winthrop a run for their money on their home floor. But that was not a win but a near miss and they don't count. My favorite near miss of the year was the men's soccer teams loss at home vs North Carolina. Number one team in the country and we out shoot them and loose by 1 goal.

Yes we did outplay them that day and it would have probably won this poll hands down had they won too.
