VA Speed Fines

Do y'all know about this? A friend just sent it to me today. . . . .
Traffic fines rise dramatically

In an attempt to find ways to fund bridge and road repair, the state of Virginia has lopped on big fines for speeders. Lawmakers have added a “civil penalty” for traffic violations on top of fines and court costs. For example, a ticket for 20 mph over the limit will pay in excess of $1,100. A first time OWI will cost a driver more than $2,700, most of it in civil penalties. Only Virginia residents will be subject to the civil penalty at this time. Truckers who are just passing through the state are exempt from the civil penality as well as motorists from other states.
This went into effect July 1. YIKES!!!

Yeah, I think the speeding thing is crazy. I've theorized that the person who wrote the bill stuck the drunk driving part on there to get the speeding part passed.

Voting against harsher penalties for drunk drivers would be political suicide.

I wish they would just bite the bullet do it. One DUI = your license is gone.

I would love to be the lawyer who goes after the law as unconstitutional.

Fumble, after you finish that Ed.D., we do have a law school here.
(I'm trying to keep you eligible for Quiz Bowl for as long as I can). :D

The state will probably clean up more. Nobody hires a lawyer for speeding tickets. Unless it's to overturn a law or something, it's more worth it to pay the fine.
