MINNEAPOLIS — A six-year-old girl has been hospitalized after a horrifying accident at a swimming pool, when she sat on an open drain and a powerful suction pump tore out part of her intestinal tract. A surgeon told the family Wednesday that part of her intestines had been lost.

Um.. ouch.

This is not the first time something like this has happened.
This article is dated 1998.
In addition to hair entrapment and drowning incidents, there have been numerous incidents in which the suction from the pool or spa drain have pulled intestines out of the body. Once intestines are out of the body, they cannot be repaired or reattached.

A lot of counties/cities require you to have two drains in a pool so that when one gets clogged with something like, say, intestines, it stops draining.

Yup i just went to a pool on the fourth in Russell Springs and i asked the owner why the heck he had 2 drains. Thats the explanation i got and it made sense i just never knew something like this was a problem.

As a lifegaurd. Who ever was taking care of this pool is a complete and total idiot. Normally those drains are kept at minimal Suction because of where they are placed. if the suction was so high that it did that. someone messed up royally in the pump room.
