Ok, I just realized this talking to JDub. He claims he was never taught that it's two spaces after a period when typing. I've always been taught two spaces, as was everyone in my high school, and I think my freshman English class in college.

How many spaces do you use? One or two?

ESPECIALLY RIGHT BEFORE THE PERIOD....

You know the difference between a woman with PMS and a terrorist is?

...you can actually negotiate with the terrorist.

Growing up I was told to put two spaces after the period. Now it's said that only applies to monospaced fonts like the Courier family. I'm old school, though. I always use two spaces.

Two spaces always. But it is considered old school thinking.

I believe most style manuals--including MLA, APA, & Turabian--require 2 spaces after both a period and a colon. Study

Nice terrorist joke, but the way I heard it was the difference between a "terrorist & a Baptist," but with the same punch line. :P

My guess is whatever Cider Jim says is correct.

That's exactly what I was taught and how I do it.

I knew I was right.

I was taught differently about what happens after a semicolon. But since hardly anyone uses that punctuation mark anymore I guess it is no longer relevant.

A semi-colon is only one space. A colon and period is two spaces.

For English papers: 2 spaces

Newspaper Articles: 1 space

Messageboards: who cares :P

Why is there a difference between newspapers and regulars?

I'm not criticizing someone over a message board, I was just legitimately surprised that JDub hadn't been taught that.

A semi-colon is only one space. A colon and period is two spaces.
I hate to admit it, but Super is right--again.

Sounds like he knows enough that he can simply CLEP out of his 200 level English just through FF.

I enjoy the use of semi-colons; they are quite beneficial to many sentences.

That's funny....

Dwight Shrute: That's a terrible idea.

Jim Halpert: What is?

Dwight Shrute: Them, in there all together. If they stay in there too long, they're gonna get on the same cycle. Wreak havoc on our plumbing.

When I write my papers and short stories I use one. I was taught two spaces as well but I just tended to use one because I was typing quickly (and often burning the midnight oil). BTW PA, that was a very funny comment about period and a happy marriage.
