Perspective Write Up of One-Semester Liberty Student

who transfered to Eastern University. (Some will take exception, but gotta admit, some of her observations are kinda funny...)
Found in the student paper: The Waltonian
http://media.www.waltonian.com/media/st ... 6056.shtml
It was then I heard it: the sound of male voices. My heart skipped a beat as my feet picked up speed toward my dorm room...
...I attended Liberty in spring 2005 and enjoyed the experience. At the time, I didn't notice the rules. I never found them stifling or excessive. But after coming to Eastern, I often wonder how I never thought the rules to be restrictive.
...But the dress code never seemed to dampen the students' spirits. In fact, every morning on my way to class I could have sworn there was a beauty pageant of which I had not been informed being held on main campus.
...A late arrival to the hour-long service resulted in demerits. One's only way around that policy was to be on good terms with--or possibly related to--the RA.
...In retrospect, while the rules were not truly excessive, they were a bit irritating.
...Eastern treats its students as young adults who must make their own decisions and grow from experience. The open interaction between those of the opposite sex has made it more comfortable to communicate openly and often. It has been amazing to have such freedom and know it is my choice.
Liberty is a good school--it's just not a good place for me.

The article is spot on. It's exactly how the school is. It's not for everybody.

I disagree that it is spot on. She has at least one fallacy and one implication that I disagree with in her Op piece.
First, the implication:
Eastern treats its students as young adults who must make their own decisions and grow from experience.
By saying that, she is obviously implying that Liberty does not treat it's students that way. I disagree. Liberty does treat their students that way, however there are certain decisions that they simply can't allow to be made on campus. Those in charge have certain responsibilities because of their own faith to do their best to limit a few decisions from being made
on campus. I'm not sure what experiences she wishes to grow from that she couldn't have at LU, but I'd venture to say that the ones we have rules against aren't experiences I'd want to have.
Second, her fallacy:
Liberty creates its rules based on the convictions of its founder.
False. Liberty's rules were created based on decisions by the board of trustees. If she (or anyone else) thinks that every rule at LU were the direct result of Jerry, she's very much mistaken. For that matter, he was also the one who never wanted to kick anyone out. He was not an enforcer at all. But, in order to maintain a higher standard for our campus, some people to be. That's just how it is. We can't be different and be just like every other school at the same time.
I'm glad she still sees LU as a good school and I'm glad she figured out it wasn't for her.
Furthermore, I can't really understand why every year, year after year, people make the decision to come to LU and then complain about it. I'm really getting tired of it.

Yea, I didn't like the young adult thing. I had only been up ten minutes when I posted.
I guess I was saying "spot on" in the case that it's not for everyone.

Well her spot at LU is now open to someone who can handle LU, obviously she could not

How do you get off saying she couldn't handle it? She chose not to. Someone who "couldn't" handle it gets kicked out. Someone who "chooses" not to handle it transfers.

she was pretty close to spot on...i mean yes she stated some things that were a little off...but she didn't bash the school like many current student do....I think the article was fine...Liberty isn't for everybody, this is very much true

Beauty pageant? She went to school here recently?
Girls haven't dressed up in years. Most don't even wear dresses to church on Sunday's.

This is clearly not true. To qualify as a beauty pageant requires a swimsuit competition. I would certainly have made certain I was informed on that front.

We should then tell Medic all about it and then not take pictures.

I just won't show him.

Back in the day I transferred to Liberty from The University of Pittsburgy at Johnstown. But I never thought about writing the reasons for my transfer in the Student Paper's opinion section.
I mean, I could have wrote something like...
"I liked being at Pitt...but now being at Liberty I enjoy the freedom of going to social events that aren't always centered around getting drunk. Pitt is a good school, it just wasn't for me. I think it is because teachers here at Liberty actually have convictions, and treat students like responsible adults."
Would that really be news worthy? And why would I want to make a stereotype about my former school like that?

I made my decision to come to Liberty after my campus tour of Eastern. I hadn't visited LU yet but when the tour guide (also some dean) found out I was looking at LU he spent most of his time comparing Eastern to LU by telling me how terrible LU was for having Convocation and some of these rules.
I guess he figured I'd be like most kids and say "Yeah, I don't want any of that. I'm a young adult, I want freedom!"
I didn't.
In fact, I got in the car with my mom and cousin who were with me on the visit and said "I think I want to go to Liberty. If this guy is so afraid of them that he spends most of his time dissing them, they must be doing something right."
I also came from a background that wanted LU. I didn't want Bob Jones or PCC... but I've never seen (even as an 18 year old partying punk) LU's rules as "too" excessive. While as a student I was glad to see some policies on facial hair and televisions go... I never felt smothered. I felt like I signed up for it and the benefits of that atmosphere far outweighed what I gave up. The trade off was certainly in my benefit and my life was changed because of it... so I was cool with letting down some of my "rights as a young adult".
So while she wrote how LU wasn't for her, I was glad LU was for me.

Oh, Eastern Eastern.
Thanks. I'd never heard of the school until just now. Their website is fairly impressive.

You think it's impressive? I couldn't even find the link to their DI athletic page.

For D3, it's quite impressive. Go take a look at "D1" Texas Southern's page and get back to me.

If you only knew the sad state of Texas Southern University you wouldn't be dissing the little website that they have.

I have a degree from Eastern.
My kids can go to Eastern for next to nothing because they attend DCCS
www.dccs.org
My son chose Liberty (Eastern does not have hockey

)
Eastern is one half step from any secular university.
I will not even discuss some of the faculty that I had......
Eastern & Liberty are completely different academically, athletically, socially and most important, spritually.

Yeah, if only I knew. Or, if only I cared. Which I don't. In either case.
PS - Their website still sucks.

After reading my post after it was online I realized that some people may think that I am implying that Eastern is inferior to Liberty.
For the sake of christian unity, I am making no such comparison.......

Isn't Tony Campolo ("It's Friday...but Sunday's coming") a teacher there?

He is a "professor emeritus" complete with the "Campolo College of Graduate Studies" and the "Campolo School for Social Change" obvoiusly named after him.
