Albeit of the Flame/Eagle variety since it seems we're sticking with both (perhaps in front of DeMoss and in front of the Stadium &/or Arena) Down in the 757, they have mermaids in various places downtown and the Outer Banks has Pegasus around various places.
High Points Panther in front of an Academic Building
I say an Eagle with the wings morphing into flames at the tips would be a cool design for a comparable statue. (They could always mount a plaque on or have it "burnt engraved" into the wood perch that contains a reference either to the "They shall mount up with wings as Eagles..." or in reference to the Liberty verse, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is Liberty." Others could suffice as well.
And it should be as large as that Panther there; that seems to me a good scale.
Here's a sample, although I like the idea of the second or third "pose" style except with the flame incorporated into the wings

Totally againist anything eagles. Now if you want to remove flames and rename ourselves eagles, fine.

Would you prefer a giant bronzed matchbook?
Seriously, the eagle our official mascot, right?

I like how they incorporated your actual logo into the eagle's head. That's pretty creative. I'm not a fan of it being so high though. You should be able to touch it.

this is the same school where the kids are able to touch the concrete around the spirit rock (take a look at it sometime) and touch the fountain in the courtyard

good point. The very same campus that thinks since you can paint one rock, surley all of them are for painting. During my 4 years, the Liberty Bell was also, at one point, a victim of "spirit painting". They dropped the hammer on that.

here's an idea: shrubbery
think "gigantic terrifying leaf-eagle/flame"

Medic, shubbery might not work, because some over-zealous fan might set it on fire like they have with the Spirit Rock. The rock can take a torching, but not a (burning) bush, please.

I think something like this would be great. Probably in front of Demoss would be most applicable.

It has to be an eagle. There's nothing else it can be.
