Surely I'm not the only one who saw this today:

I try to keep up with tech news, so I'm well aware of where robots are at right now. However, the combination of the human face, creepy gray skin and the ability to feel makes this bot creep me out on a whole new level. In the video that accompanies the article, it really really weirds me out when it's rolling around on the floor and turning to look at people.

On a side note, I just read an article last week that says we're only ten years away from self-aware artificial intelligence. Combine that with this robot's ability to feel and the redundantly connected world we live in and we're only a few decades away from SkyNet. We'd better seriously start looking at forcing manufacturers to follow Asimov's laws.

(If you don't get the SkyNet reference, pay more attention the next time you watch Terminator.)

I may go down as one of these guys ---> but I don't see this ever happening unless it's somewhat biological in nature and would therefore be "alive". Sure, I'm not engineer and my tiny brain probably just can't fathom how we would acheive this.

The self-aware part trips me up, too. However, we already have plenty of software applications that can make decisions when given enough input. If enough decision-making applications were combined and being controlled by an application that knew which one to route to based on input, you'd pretty much be there. From everything I've read, it's not really a question of if anymore. It's just a matter of time. Once applications have been written to cover all of the basic human decisions, they'll build from there.

but wouldn't it still be choosing from a list of predefined decisions? Even if they do cover every decision possible. I still don't see how it could, say, come up with a completely original idea.

Not necessarily a list of predefined decisions, but more likely predefined goals. If it has enough methods of input and a list of goals, it would be able to make decisions about how to best accomplish those goals using it's own tools and abilities. (Like Big Blue playing chess.) That sort of thing is doable now. As for the original ideas, or "thinking outside of the box"...I don't know. I wish I could understand it (mostly because I'd probably be a lot more wealthy), but I just keep reading articles where engineers are talking like it's not even possible that there won't be that kind of AI. It'll certainly be interesting.

I thought about Netflix, but Blockbuster has the same price, and I get a free in store rental once a month. Also, if I take a movie back to the store I get a free in store rental.

Same price, but not nearly the same selection. And you can watch movies online with Netflix.

one of the good things about living on campus. don't pay to get movies, just ask around the hall. 90% of the time someone has it

our pastors brother works for the nsa and took him on a tour....he pointed him to a building and told him it was the "technology" building.....he said that there are things going on there that would boggle the mind....for instance, they have a chip that can now read the mind.
