Fred Dalton Thompson is planning to enter the presidential race over the Fourth of July holiday, announcing that week that he has already raised several million dollars and is being backed by insiders from the past three Republican administrations, Thompson advisers told The Politico.

Thompson, the "Law and Order" star and former U.S. senator from Tennessee, has been publicly coy, even as people close to him have been furiously preparing for a late entry into the wide-open contest. But the advisers said Thompson dropped all pretenses on Tuesday afternoon during a conference call with more than 100 potential donors, each of whom was urged to raise about $50,000.

Gentlemen, let me be the first to introduce the 2008 Republican Presidential Nominee. I can't wait for him to just slap Mitt with his flip/flop and Rudy with his NOW sign. Hillary and Barack just crapped their diapers.

I'm a Newt fan myself but I am glad to see a true conservative in the race.

It will be interesting to see how the graduation speakers are selected now under the next generation. I would make assumptions about nothing at this point.

As for Fred, he certainly will make the race much more entertaining.

I was definitely thinking the same, although, I would expect Jerry Jr. to keep things very similar to the way they were. What I think will be interesting, is if these speakers would still want to come here.

Ah, to me, he'll always be Trudeau from the second Die Hard movie.

Can we get somebody from the Chamber Orchestra to make the <'Glong! Glong!'> sound when he gets up to speak?

I agree. That will be interesting. I would hope that politicians would see speaking at LU's graduation as speaking to the next 4,000 leaders of their base support and not as speaking at Jerry Falwell's school. However, if we had some folks other than politicians speaking, I wouldn't hate it at all. I think it's an important tradition to continue, but not necessarily year in and year out. Next year will certainly be the most interesting for that sort of thing, though.

To me he'll always be Admiral Painter from Hunt for Red October.
