Tax question

Ok, as some on here know, I moved at the beginning of the year. I gave my apartment complex a forwarding address but since I rarely, if ever, got mail, I didn't think of giving it to the post office. Mid-February I realized that I hadn't recieved a W2 from that place I worked last year, and that they probably sent it to that address. I went by the store, and they told me to call the corporate offices. I called the corporate offices and they told me a way to get it online that simply didn't work (the password they gave me was wrong). I have called corporate offices 2-3 other times leaving voicemails each time (twice in the past week) and have yet to get a response.

What am I supposed to do in regards to my taxes? I don't have all of my pay stubs so I don't know what to do. I don't want to file an extension because it'll take from what little refund I get. Anyone have any advice?

First off, filing an extension won't change the amount of the refund you would get. It will just delay when you will get it.

And check this page on the IRS website:
http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc154.html

It gives you a phone number to call at the IRS and the procedure to follow if you don't get your W-2.

Dude, it's April 11. As in, "your taxes are due in 4 days." Yeah, that April 11.

WEF gave good advice. You will actually be okay...as long as you get on it.

That brings up an interesting question. What is the latest everyone has filed their taxes?
I got within 2 weeks a couple of years ago and I almost passed out. I don't need that kind of stress. (I am already a middle school teacher.) :pale

I've been trying to get in touch with the corporate offices for a month now.

I'll get the form tonight, get the taxes done tomorrow.

Being a student and only working a public job last year for two months makes things a lot easier. The other stuff was under the table.

And if you are sure you are going to get a refund, you don't technically even have to file on time (since penalties are based on taxes owed and also since the IRS isn't going to complain much about you not claiming your refund)...

From IRS Tax Tip 2007-17:

http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,, ... 54,00.html
There is no penalty for failure to file if you are due a refund. However, you cannot obtain a refund without filing a tax return. If you wait too long to file, you may risk losing the refund altogether. The deadline for claiming refunds is three years after the return due date. For example, the last day for claiming a refund for your 2003 tax return will be April 17, 2007.
Now that is on the IRS end...some states impose penalties for late filing, regardless of whether you owe any taxes or not..and I don't know what state you are dealing with, so I can't help you with that part.

Do you do this for a living or do you just know everything?

Both....Well, I am an accountant, and just recently passed the CPA exam, though I no longer do taxes for a living..

But other than that, I do know everything...

Here's my tip: Never write the above statement in a public forum!

Actually, as a college student, you're parents are probably still claiming you on their taxes. Depending on how much you made last year, you may not have to file at all.

Dude, I was joking.

No, seriously, I was.

Why type of work am I going to do under the table? You know I'm not doing construction or anything like that.

Any money you make on a "hobby" less than I think $3000 isn't taxable anyways. Not that I have any hobbies.

Ditto. I'd file 'em on New Years' Day if I could. There's just something I love about getting money back.

I generally have mine finished by February. I completely forgot about them this year.

I filed mine late Jan/early Feb with TurboTax Online (freefile). It's like an online game show.

Look at that, Winthrop-ians and LU-ites helping one another out, living in harmony...momentarily. Medic, you should snapshot this for 9 months from now when the strife and discord reemerge during basketball season to remind us that we "all really can get along."

PA,

I think I'm alright, never went to the doc. I'm still a little swollen and black and blue, but I can walk fine.

My taxes are pretty straightforward, so I just use the 1040EZ form. Sending it snail-mail in mid February and having it direct deposited, I had my refund by shortly after the first of March. I think the direct deposit speeds things up more than anything. Generating a hard-copy check is a totally seperate operation for the IRS and slows things down a lot.

We did ours early this year through Liberty Tax Service (it really had nothing to do with the name...I just got it done for free for being a teacher). The wierd thing is that our return was exactly, I mean down to the penny, what we tithed last year. Maybe this is a comment more suited for another forum, but praise God for that!
