Simple, really.

The situation began in March. From there, it was downhill -- but the D.A. couldn't drop the case because of public outcry, and b) he was about to be voted out of office in the primary. Keep the story in the news, keep trying to find something -- and he can keep his job.

But he couldn't drop the case until November -- because that's when the actual election was to take place (which he won because of Durham's large amount of African-American voters -- I'm not trying to make a racial issue of this, it's just a fact).

So he dropped it in what, late December? That's when he gave the case over to the att'y general's office, who had to sift through thousands of pages of material. And that doesn't take just a few hours.

But the final nail in the coffin happened when the accuser stopped cooperating w/ the investigators, which just occurred this week. So that's why. Gotta make sure things are thorough.

April 10, 2007 — The office of North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper will announce that he is dismissing all charges against three Duke Lacrosse players, ABC News has learned from sources close to the case.

Cooper will announce his decision regarding the case at the North Carolina Attorney General's office in Raleigh, N.C., at 2:30 p.m.
Interesting timing on this one. Same day as the Imus/Rutgers press conference. I didn't even hear about this until this morning.

I doubt it, they probably think the players got off because they are white...I don't know how to say this politely, but there are many black people on this site...I just want to know does it tick you off that these guys consider themselves "leaders" in the black community....I would be ashamed....two of the biggest racist out there today....them and micheal richards...haha

ok we can do without the richards blast...but indeed sharpton and jackson are racist and for me are not even on the same page for being a role model. they are a detriment.

What's sad about this is that these kids lives and reputations are ruined. The fact that the charges are dropped is getting little to no press time and no apologies from everyone who villified these guys. Yeah, they had a stripper over and that wasn't the smartest thing in the world, but there should be 50% of the college male population that should have their reputations ruined if that is deserved.

It's sad that these guys won't get any apologies and now they have to work for the rest of their lives to set their name straight.

Well with the words INNOCENT being announced by the NC Head Attorney, they have their reputations back with some money coming to them.

what money?? They cannot file a claim against the DA because he is a public official and works for the state and has immunity.

Yes they can file a civil lawsuit against the DA because of the word innocent being used by the Head DA. They can probably also sue Duke U, the Durham police dept, state of NC,etc. They have a good chance of winning because of the word innocent being used. If the head DA had said there was not enough evidence to convict them and dropped the charges then they would have a hard time thru the civil courts, but with the word innocent being used, it is in their favor. Their civil liberties have been severly violated.
The head DA can be called on their behalf in their civil suit. Mike Nifong will probably be disbarred and kicked out of office, so whether he is in office or not, he is a target for a civil suit

my dad said this is all the local news has been talking about, and that nifong will be prosecuted. he will at least be disbarred and could serve jail time. they have him on several charges, i think the main one is hiding evidence.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A disciplinary committee said Saturday disgraced prosecutor Mike Nifong will be disbarred for his disastrous prosecution of three Duke University lacrosse players falsely acussed of rape — a punishment the veteran prosecutor admitted was appropriate.

"This matter has been a fiasco. There's no doubt about it," said committee chairman F. Lane Williamson.
