Actor Fred Thompson Considers 2008 Run

WASHINGTON - Fred Thompson thinks there isn't enough "star" power in the GOP presidential field, so the professional actor and former Tennessee senator is considering getting into the 2008 race.

Thompson, who plays district attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's drama "Law & Order," said Sunday that he's going to "leave the door open" and make a decision in the coming months.

"I'm going to wait and see what happens," Thompson said. "I want to see my colleagues on the campaign trial, what they say, what they emphasize, whether they can carry the ball next November."

"I think people are somewhat disillusioned. A lot of people are cynical out there. They're looking for something different," he said.

Thompson, 64, said he was pondering a run after former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker and other Tennessee Republicans began drumming up support for his possible GOP candidacy, citing his conservative credentials.

On the issues, Thompson said he:

_Is "pro-life," and believes federal judges should overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision as "bad law and bad medical science."

_Opposes gay marriage, but would let states decide whether to allow civil unions. "Marriage is between a man and a woman, and judges shouldn't be allowed to change that."

_Opposes gun control, and praised last week's 2-1 federal appeals decision overturning a long-standing handgun ban. "The court basically said the Constitution means what it says."

_Supports President Bush's decision to increase troops in Iraq. "Wars are full of mistakes. You rectify them. I think we are doing that now," he said. "We've got to give it a chance to work."

_Would pardon former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's conviction for perjury and obstruction of justice now, rather than waiting until all his appeals are exhausted.

Libby is "bearing the political brunt of something that should've never come about," Thompson said, noting that "practically every witness at trial had inconsistent statements."

Thompson said he was not setting a deadline to make a decision and believes he won't be at a disadvantage if he waited until summer. "The lay of the land will be different in a couple of months than it is today, one way or another," he said.

Thompson, the minority counsel in the Watergate investigation, was elected to the Senate in 1994 to fill the unexpired term of Vice President Al Gore. He was chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee and left the Senate in 2003 to resume his acting career.

Thompson has acted in films such as "The Hunt for Red October," "Cape Fear," and "In the Line of Fire." He was interviewed on "Fox News Sunday."

Ba bow bow bow bow bow boooow.

All his campaign commercials should end w/ "I'm Fred Thompson and I approve this message" followed by the L&O "Glonk, glonk!" sound.

Speaking of political tie-ins...
...why don't we have a Young Christian Democrats club on campus?

I actually tried to start a Young Democrats back in the late 90's. My intention was not out of any love for Democratic ideology but more just b/c I wanted to annoy people (huh, go figure), specifically the government and religion majors. Anyway, I guess my lack of fervor showed b/c I got a whopping 0 people to sign up.

Ppppht. That's easy. That's their version of "goin' crazy". The LU version of "Girls Gone Wild" if you will.
I don't give a lot of credence to Facebook groups b/c it's much easier to just put your name in a cyber-group than it is to join an actual group. What I ran into was one of three responses:
  • "Young Democrats? Seriously? Are you sure you're saved?"
or
  • "Young Democrats? Why? We're Republicans!" (Or in a few cases, "I'm a Libertarian!")
or
  • "Young Democrats? What's that? Oh, wait! Tell me later! 'Friends' is on!"

Fred Thompson is actually a man who can get Republicans very excited. If you look at his ideology and views, he's exactly what most people want, and his political composure is what a lot of the current field lacks. I'd like to see the field down to him and Newt, or possibly on the same ticket.

Whew... when I read the topic I was thinking Kenan Thompson. Come to think of it, I don't think he would be old enough yet.

I think you are looking at the graduation speaker for the class of '08...really though, Thompson has the most conservative views of any of the candidates in my opinion, fiscally and morally. I could see him as a candidate that the evangelical community could get behind and throw their support to. I remember there was an actor they did that to before and that worked out pretty good.

Except that Actor also happened to have serious executive experience in a small state called CALIFORNIA... and his acting days were long gone by the time he got into politics... and he had a failed presidential run once before so the country had time to get to know him a little....
