Man sees red over flower delivery
Dionne Waugh

February 15, 2006

The flowers smelled nice, but the customer’s attitude stunk.

Lynchburg police were called Tuesday to calm and eventually remove a patron from Park Avenue Flower Shop after he disrupted business.

Police Officer N.A. Leger said the man, who was not arrested, confronted store workers just after 1 p.m.

The man thought the store had guaranteed to deliver a dozen long-stemmed red roses, costing about $70, by 11 a.m., Leger said.

The shop said it doesn’t guarantee deliveries by a specific time on Valentine’s Day for obvious reasons, Leger said.

At that point, the man asked for his money back and was told the flowers were already on the truck going out, Leger said.

“He was causing enough of a scene that business had stopped. On Valentine’s Day, that really can’t happen. That’s why they called,” Leger said.

Officers explained to the man he could take up the issue in civil court and eventually asked him to leave, which he did peacefully, Leger said.

“It was nothing violent, just a little disagreement over flowers and the agreement between the two.”

Store employees declined to comment.

I didn't even see my wife yesterday as she went to work before I got up and she was in bed by the time I got home ... but I left her flowers & card. That's the bare minimum to keep me out of the doghouse (where I have found myself plenty of times before).

I feel pretty lucky...my wife doesn't like Valentine's Day...When we started dating, she told me not to get her a gift, and of course I got her one (why would I believe that she really meant it). I gave it to her and she fussed at me, asking why I didn't listen to her...So from that point forward, I haven't given her anything and she's fine with it (though she is appreciative of gifts at other times of the year, and would probably fuss if I never got her anything outside of her birthday and our anniversary)...

My wife always tells me the same thing ... but I made the mistake of believing her ONE TIME. From that point on I knew better.

I just ask my wife ahead of time. I say "What would communicate to you that I do love you?"

This year she said "To come home to a clean house and dinner waiting.

I said "okay". So I cooked a dinner from scratch and cleaned the house. I also got her a card and a bear but it was the cleaning and preparing the food that made her a happy woman.

Long ago I too came to the understanding that, in this case- "no" does NOT mean "no". As in- should we buy each other anything?

As far as cooking- w/ me its either PBJ, spaghetti or canned soup- thats on a good day. Anything involving a stove is not me at my best.

forgot- I can do box mix brownies as well. That's actually my specialty- usually end up eating the entire 8 x 11 pan in one or two evenings though.

I got a free home cooked meal last night. Some friends of my didn't want to be alone for Valentine's Day (too much, um, temptation) so they asked the girl's sister to eat with them and asked me to be her "date." I didn't hafta get the girl anything and got a made from scratch meal. Best valentine's day ever, maybe?

if you get stuck in SE-PA give me a shout- I'll send a rig over! What section of the city you visiting?

avoid the parking garages on the lower east side- @ 30$ for half a day

I know this is completely hijacking the thread (hey, its in the Lynhcburg Life forum), but since it has been brought up I must ask:

Are there any suggestions for quick day in & out of NYC?

We are going to be coming from Atlantic City (don't ask) and we're considering taking the time to take the Staten island ferry across to Manhattan and then doing a drive through Times Square before getting back off the island as quickly as possible. Is this a reasonable scenario and how much time would you suspect it would require?

We stayed in mid-town a block from Times Square. We actually went with a friend from LU and her husband, who both grew up in Brooklyn. It made for a much better trip to the city than I would have otherwise expected. I didn't ever have to worry about remembering where we were or where we were going. It was just following them around. Did some tourist-y things, caught a show on Broadway, ate a lot of food and booked it back to Lynchburg late last night. It was an awesome trip but man was it cold. We waited in line for an hour+ at TKTS in Times Square for our show tickets and I was completely frozen by the time we left. Barely walking kind of frozen. I'd do it all again in a heartbeat though. Awesome weekend.

glad you had a good time SCORCHO. NYC is a cool place to visit.

SLY- you can figure thats gonna be at least 2 or 3 hours, but it really depends on what day of the week and time of day you're talking about. Mid-town during the week is hellacious.

If you are doing it on the weekend, esp Sunday, it won't be bad at all. The only other suggestion I have is that if you come across into Manhattan from Staten Island thru the lower east side, swing up into the WTC site area. If you haven't seen it since 9/11 you'll be amazed. It will really move you as well- just to be standing where 343 of my brothers laid down their lives about rips your heart out but you will be glad you went.

(site is in the area of Church/Vesy streets- and there is a parking garage on West St right above Battery Park)

If we make the trip up there to NYC (weather permitting) it would be on a Thursday. Our plan is to come across the ferry just after morning rush hour and then get back off the island (probably via the Holland Tunnel shortly after noon. We don't even plan on getting out of the vehicle to mess with the parking in Manhattan. While a stop by Ground Zero would be great, I just don't think we have the time.

But thanks for the suggestions.
