how long has the "members" link at the top bar been gone?
I went up there tonite and noticed we have a "search", "FAQ", and "usergroups" but no "members" link anymore.
Call me Rip Van Winkle, but I woulda thought I'd have noticed that before.
please tell me that is a recent change. And, no, I wasn't consulted

Yeah, it just disappeared from our optionsa couple weeks ago. It could be residual from a failed upgrade I atttempted last month. I'm no IT genius as you've probably figured out by now.

I took it away to help combat problems with the Spambots. According to my research the member list link is one of the many reasons why they like to visit our board. Not only do they want to post ads in the forums, they want to harvest email addresses and such for sending email spam later. Yep. Every opinion I got was that it was best just to remove the member list.
I'm also going to be making some other less noticeable changes on this front in the near future.

There you have it. Doesn't everybody want less spam?

agreed. And the search bar was a very nice addition. More and more often, when looking for a particular topic- I find it nearly impossible to wade thru 40,000 + posts to find it. Thats how we end up w/ redundant topics and threads.
nice touch, SCORCHO

I am a history teacher...so here comes the question.
How and when did this board come to be? Why the change from the old to the new? Just curious.
Anyone care to give the history teacher a lesson? (Please, no homework. I hate that stuff.)

I'm a history buff myself. But this won't take very long.
Innocent Bystander started the old Firehouse on Proboards just before March Madness 2004. stevev and I were talking to ourselves like on the even older LU Alumni Connections board for awhile before we eventually began building a core following. After about a year, we had about 50 posters who were regularly checking in with PAmedic exerting his posting prowess. The Proboards set up had its limitations and it started crashing on a VERY regular basis.
So about a year ago, I began thinking of starting our own board with CoastalFans as somewhat of a model. After chatting with our resident IT guru on the board, we decided to press forward. We did a soft launch back in January when the Proboards issues became ridiculous and then just decided to move forward while we were building the site. Within six months, we had doubled the size of the old board and it has grown exponentially ever since.
The original plan was to build a site that had plenty of editorial content on a front page in addition to the boards. That hasn't happened for a number of reasons (primarily the full plates of our admins with babies all over the place) and we still are using a temporary header. I'd still love to see some more ideas for a new logo and matching header.
Bottom line, I'd love to see us take our site to the next level in the not too distant future. The board continues to grow everyday and we are open to anyone wanting to help the cause.

except me. He doesn't like my radical ideas
actually, I don't think I've ever submitted anything. Hmm, better come up with something good to earn my keep around here.

Before we get to anything else with this site, I've got to stop the spammers on the board. There have been a few incidents lately of them using images (porn) along with their spam. That's completely unacceptable.
Unfortunately for them, I've got a few changes on the way. I'm just trying to plan things out as thoroughly as possible to minimize downtime. Hopefully no one will even notice when it happens.

I know you're getting nervous medic, but just let it go. He's determined to pass you and the maximum amount of post padding will see to it that he does it.

yes. I've finally come to terms with the situation.
look to see about 40 one or two word posts from a certain fat kid from SC over the course of the next couple days.
EDIT: oh, exxxxcuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuzzzzz me.
the esteemed gentleman redneck from NORTH hicksville wishes not to be associated with those low-life rednecks from SOUTH hicksville.

I'm from NC, please don't degrade me by saying SC. And the only one word post I've done lately was telling you to shutup. It's better than those posts that are just smiley's. I tend to type at least two sentences in my posts. I haven't had too many short posts lately. I seriously just checked because I hate post padders and didn't want to be thrown into that category. I just have no life and tend to respond to everything.
