Dunton: Brookville's point man
By Ted Allen
Lynchburg News & Advance
February 10, 2006

Brookville junior Matt Dunton has a decided advantage over many of his peers when it comes to fine-tuning his jump shot.
He is the son of Liberty University men's basketball coach Randy Dunton, who has helped improve his form and follow-through on their backyard court as well as in the Flames' home facilities.

"The gym's always open," Matt Dunton said. "He's got the keys (to the Vines Center) so there's no excuse for me not to be at the top of my game."

Though he's hit his share of clutch 3-pointers, Dunton's greatest gift on the basketball court is not his shooting skill. What makes him a Division I prospect, at LU or elsewhere, is his phenomenal passing ability from the point guard position.

"He's got a great ability to see the floor, be it in the half-court setting or in the full-court (on fast breaks)," Brookville coach Chris Young said.

Young said the Bees have become accustomed to being set up with precise passes in scoring position, from all over the court. Sometimes, however, they are caught unaware.

"Matt, you've just got to adjust to playing with him because you never know when he's going to get you the ball," Young said. "He makes some spectacular passes and really good decisions at times.

"He's our point guard so the ball's in his hands 95 percent of the time, whether it's breaking the press or running the offense," he added.

The best statistic to judge a point guard by is his assist-to-turnover ratio. Dunton's is among the highest in the area this season at 2-to-1 (7.5 assists to 3.8 turnovers).

"I have to lead the team, just like a quarterback in football," Dunton said. "My main responsibility is running the show, getting the offense going, motivating the players to give their best and keeping their heads up. I've got to be careful with the ball and keep the turnovers down to a minimum."

With the game in the balance, Dunton is often the Bees' best option to take a shot.

"If we need a 3-(pointer), we're usually looking for him in big situations," Young said. "He always finds a way to hit the big shot."

But Dunton would just assume assist the winning basket rather than score it himself.

"He's a very unselfish player," Young said. "He looks for his teammates more than he looks for his own shot."

Dunton has developed his court vision and floor leadership by picking up the game at a very early age.

"I've been playing basketball since I can remember, starting with YMCA when I was 3 or 4 down at the Armory," he said. "Ever since then, it's been a blast. Definitely, it's always been my passion."

Since starting on the varsity team at Brookville as a freshman, Dunton has worked to sharpen his skills and make the Bees stronger as a team. He hopes to lead them back to the Region III tournament for the first time since his freshman year while at the same time prepare to take his game to the next level.

"I always have something to improve on or I'd be in the NBA right now," Dunton said.

He said his dad never pressured him into playing basketball, but only helped fan the flame and stoke his desire.

"He's helped me a lot, but I've had to do the work to be where I'm at," he said, "I've spent those nights out there shooting the ball."

Having Randy Dunton as his father has "just given me more opportunity to be a better player."

On occasion, members of the Flames' men's team have shown up to watch their coach's son play with the Bees.

"It's fun and always an honor for them to come watch me play," Matt Dunton said. "Maybe one day, I'll be playing with them."

In Tuesday's win over Jefferson Forest, Dunton bruised his left wrist after being undercut by a Cavalier on a drive to the basket and falling to the floor after landing on the defender's back. He picked up a technical foul on the play, possibly because the official misunderstood him when he asked the JF player if he was OK.

Though that technical foul may not have been deserved, Dunton has picked up some legitimate ones in his career, as his dad has at LU.

"We both have the fire in our bellies," Matt Dunton said. "We definitely have the intensity and the will to win. Sometimes, our emotions get the best of us, but we've been working on that."

When Brookville opens play in the Seminole District tournament, Saturday night at 7 in a home rematch with Forest, Dunton wants his performance on the court to play a larger role than his emotions and words.

"We're getting better, definitely, every day," said Dunton, whose team is seeded third at 13-6, 11-3 in district play. "We have to step up when (the game's) on the line. That's when we've got to play our best."

He and his teammates always look forward to playing at home, in the "Bees Nest."

"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else," Dunton said. "We have the best student crowd in the district. Every game, home or away, they're out here going nuts. Even when we're not playing too well, they're supporting us."

He may be cut off the same mold as Paige Moir, who "played" at Tech when daddy was the coach, there.
HOWEVER, if you need a PG who's content at distributing the rock and playing under control, he could be just this ticket. With the tuition perk, he would not even count as a scholarship, either.

I honestly don't know the rules regarding whether he would counted against our scholarship numbers if he goes to LU free as the son of a staff member. I think that might be a key factor int he scenario. If we can have him as a walk-on then absolutely he's more than welcome. If not, he's going to have earn the scholie on the court (which he very well could do).

he seems to be a ball-control kinda guy. With the issues we've had w/ TO's, esp in the front court- that might be the kinda playa we need. Hopefully those problems will be resolved by 2008 though, and it won't be an issue!

Sly...I think he has to be counted in the 13 scholarships. I remember back when Rick Reeves was coaching and Crystal and Kimmie both were scholarship athletes.

Who said no? I've never seen the kid play but this article makes him sound pretty good and good passers are hard to find.

Why isn't this in the basketball section? It's completely related to our team.

If he gets so much as $1 of athletic aid, then the tuition waiver has to count. Otherwise, I am 97% sure the waiver does not count as "countable aid." That is the case in some sports, but may very well NOT be the case in the so-called "head count" sports like M & W BB and volleyball.

They were on scholarships but they didnt have to be...it was actually one of the most odd things I've ever seen at LU I'll never forget when I asked him about that (being on scholarships) and he told me that it was they deserved the prestige of being on a full athletic scholarship and so they wouldnt have to pay to live on campus...I just talked to a coach (not b-ball) and they said they are 99.9% sure he could go for free due to his father working at LU (any parents children that works full time at LU can go for free)

good news for us and the young man- a win/win. He can come and contribute if possible, we still have schollies to give out to get more help.

Just my take. If I was him I would go to another program. It would be hard to play for your Dad in the big time in D1.

it's worked before for a few kids but it takes a special kid to be able to handle it....heck we got one coach's kid on the team already....and that answers our question about the Scholarship problem....Jone's kid isnt on one yet he's not paying

I haven't seen him play, but if he's decent maybe we should give him a shot. Coach's sons are typically very smart players. Belein at WVU just to name one. Has anyone on the board seen him play. Who would you compare him too?

Yeah, whenever he steps on the court they always talk about his "unlimited range". What the freak does that mean? Can he hit full court shots at will?

Maybe his assist to TO ratio is due to the lack of finishers like our flames current status.

If you haven't seen the kid play then how can you judge?? He is a hot shot who leads the Seminole District in Technical Fouls and missed cluted free throws. He is good, but not "Turn Around A D - 1 Program" good. He would be a great player at other non D 1 schools, but will probably follow the unfortunate paths of the Reeves girls. What would be neat would see him play at another local school, and have a great father son story and let him become his own person. My two cents. Besides, why are we brining up the coach's family?

I brought it up because there was a profile done on him in the local paper and I found it interesting.

Also because we are interested to see how LCA develops as a feeder school, and because we are always looking for new prospects.

His relationship to the coach is an important sidebar, but in the discussion of his talent or potential, it is ONLY a sidebar.

if this thread fired you up you should go to the Discuss everything coaching...b/c this is nothing compared to over there....I really didnt see anything about Coach's family or anything...I think everyone on here is pretty much very supportive of Matt and his future

I havn't seen Matt play since 2004, but he seemed decent back then. He played alot of pick-up games in the Schilling and did well I thought against somewhat decent talent. The only thing he lacked back then was size for a D-1 school, but two years have past since. Alot of people back then were saying that he would probably be good enough to play at the school.

It's easy to read the thread to understand the tone of this one... No one is busting on the Coach's son. Actually look at the poll.. most people say give him a shot.

I don't think anyone else brought up the technical fouls... Maybe we need a kid with some expressive passion.

The Reeves girls were not starters at any D-1 level school. Krystal could shoot but only if left wide open. They were both great girls but I don't think anyone can compare their situation with Coach D's son. Let's keep them seperate.

I am just not sure why we would talk about a coach's son/daughter, that is a pretty sensitive topic. Being a good player in "Pick Up" games is in NO WAY a harbinger of how good a player will be. The seminole district games are this week and if you want to take a look go watch. He will be up against some very athletic heritage players and will probably struggle. LIke I said he would be a very good player at a non-DI but is a little too slow footed for DI (I can hear the JJ Reddick/Steve Alford/Mark Price comparisons coming_)

Do you read?

You talk about a coaches kid when they are mentioned as a leader of their team and could potentially fill a void. It's not a bad thing for a kid to get some ink because of his family ties. Look at Maryland and DJ Strawberry... did it hurt him to have that last name? I doubt it. Coach Rocco's nephew is on another thread. In all of these threads the posters (who've been around more than 2 posts) have said positive things.

Why jump in and start throwing elbows for no reason? Read what people have to say and get caught up... right now you don't sound like you see the whole picture. We're glad you registered though... welcome aboard...
