I live in NC but below is an interesting read on the aggressive collection policy of UVA's health care system.

Apparently the negative publicity from the article has gotten the attention of the UVA president. They are supposed to be announcing revised collections policies Friday.

“It is complicated, for a number of reasons, including the fact that we are legally obligated as a state agency to collect debts,” Ryan wrote. “But we have discretion within those legal constraints to make our system more generous and more humane, and that is what we will do. Pam and her team are finalizing the proposed changes, and we expect to announce them by the end of this week.”

UVA sued someone for 13.00, it's good for them to try to get their money, but they should apply some common sense.

Also, if someone doesn't have the money, they don't have the money. This whole mess probably is actually driven by some rogue law firm, rather than UVA Medical Center.
