In one of the great alternatives history 'What if's...'. What if his pro baseball career had panned out?
It will be interesting to see how this changes things in light of the new US relationship with the Country. Part of me thinks Trump is wanting to know if it's too late to resign and build some Casino's there. (Yes, I'm having Godfather 2 Flashbacks)

Unfortunately, there is more than one Castro in Cuba I can't imagine Raul has much time left, but I was saying that about Fidel a long time ago Hope I'm wrong, butI don't see a huge change as long as Raul is in charge

On a side note, when Fidel was near death several years back, the best of the best of the Cuban doctors who are a product of the educational system Colin Kaepernick likes to cite as the reason for his Castro fandom botched his surgeries and they brought in specialists from Spain who saved his life I suppose Colin is in mourning now What a nimrod

It has been fun watching the celebrations online of my Cuban-American friends. I'll be in Miami today before crossing the Atlantic and hope to see some of the celebraions in person.

It's odd that there are people mourning his death out there. Clearly they have never talked to Cubans who have escaped Cuba.

I'm not one to celebrate death of anybody but I have talked to many Cuban Americans throughout my life and can completely understand where they're coming from.

Yeah. All these Millennials (and Kap) who wear these Castro shirts or praise how great Cuba is are going to see a different side as all these eulogies play out. Next, if we could get them to stop wearing Che shirts that'd be awesome

Yeahh. One of my good friends from my liberty days always wore a Che shirt. We had many late night debates about it. I still don't get it

I have a LOT more respect for Che than for Fidel He may have been misguided, and was no angel, but he was a true believer He could have stayed in Cuba and lived like a fat cat with Fidel while the masses struggled in literate poverty (he and not Fidel was responsible for the vaunted literacy programs) He chose instead to try to take the revolution first to the Congo and then to Bolivia, where he died what by all reports was a pretty horrible death while Castro reportedly had a crack unit ready and chomping at the bit to fly down and rescue him and never deployed them

For the record, a revolution was DESPERATELY needed in Cuba, just not this one Things were horrible under Batista

People are here at MIA desperately trying to buy tickets to Havana to go celebrate with their families. Everyone it seems is wearing white in all of the terminals. Nary a word of English to be heard. Pretty crazy atmosphere.

I know Cuban Americans have waited over half a century for Fidel's demise, but for the moment it changes nothing, and I can imagine that their unabashed celebrations of his brother's death will be less than helpful in getting concessions to their cause from Raul and his government

I was interested in Le Batard's take this morning. He essentially said this is if Hitler died but the Nazis still controlled Germany. Sure it's great he can't terrorize them anymore, but the regime he put in place is still there and it doesn't change the past.

It won't be there for long. There will be a flood of people returning that have spent a Generation in the US bringing all they have learned to the Island. They will dispatch of Raul and his cronies quickly. Or just offer him a lot of alcohol. Cuba will be THE gem of the Caribbean before your child starts school

I don't see any mass return of Cuban Americans to their homeland until a LOT of changes occur They have it too good in the US of A For starters, most of them want back the property stolen from their families in the revolution, and we are a LONG way from that happening

You're closer to it than I am. I was just going by some of my Cuban friends and some missionary friends who have been there. Their thought process was that if Raul was in his 60's things wouldn't change or get worse. It since he's in his 80's the timetable for change will be accelerated. I possess no specific knowledge other than that

I would say if and when Raul dies or becomes incapacitated things could happen pretty quickly It depends on whether the military and the faithful communists buy in to whoever is next in line I think the chances are good they will not

Raul's age, in and of itself is irrelevant as long as he is coherent and the military supports him

They mentioned the Military and said it would fracture and had no one that would fill the void. What they said, and again its heresay and wishful thinking on my part, was the general populace has had enough and there isn't a stomach in the Military to put down a popular uprising (see East Germany)
