Does your figure include pregnancies? If so, that doesn't apply to me as I've already stated. Secondly, is your figure a representation of accidents (not referring to cars) that resulted in hospital stay? Or does your figure also include those of old age being admitted? If so, then of course the stats would swing that way....death is imminent. Does your figure also include anyone under 16?

You have not proven that you are more likely to be hospitalized than in a car wreck. I don't understand why you're so insistent to prove that it's a valid comparison.

You clearly stated that there are not as many people in hospitals as there are car accidents. You're moving the goalposts.

I resorted to calling the decision idiotic because I think it's idiotic. You are free to make those idiotic decisions and I don't like that Obamacare mandated it.

I'm sure you're a smart guy overall. Don't worry

After baby #2 I made sure to permanently make sure it didn't happen again. You know what paid for it? Insurance!

Let's stay on topic here, calling VAGolf idiotic! Haha

And that should be his right. He should not have to be forced to buy something that he doesn't feel he needs. If he plays the odds and loses then he can deal with the consequences
Personal Responsibility. What a concept
no we all deal with the consequences. thats the point. he's not stuck with those bills. he'll bankruptcy out of them and we are all left to pay for it. the concept that he would is a nice ideal but not reality. healthcare costs are responsible for like 65% of bankruptcies in america.

btw there were 300+ million people admitted to the the hospital last year. 18 million of them had overnight stays. there were only like 6 million traffic accidents reported last year.

Right, but that's part of the problem, it's self-perpetuating. Costs go up, so people can't pay. People can't pay, so costs go up. And the initial trigger that started the cycle and helps to keep it going: government money.

All of these supposed solutions, but not once has the problem of the actual cost (price) been addressed. Insurance will never be affordable as long as the actual services are affordable. This is what socialism does to the market.

i was only addressing the personal responsibility as if he really is the only one responsible for those costs.

costs are high due to a number of things obviously but one of them is the existence of insurance companies in the first place. their systems create complicated methodology that requires more staff more systems, etc driving up cost. when i can call a dr and say i don't have insurance and negotiate a visit down to 50 bucks yet they'll charge insurance like 250 and then insurance will say we'll pay 170. its a bit ridiculous.

Our new benefits are available on the 7th. Wonder how much more I'll have to pay. Soon I'll have to pay the 'Cadillac' tax as well'

I actually found out I can have a similar procedure performed for $1,000 without the insurance. Instead of getting health insurance, I could just have the surgery. :D

And to rubbermallet, if something happened, I have enough savings to take care of whatever that may be. However, even if I didn't, I don't have a responsibility to be insured so that "you don't end up paying." If there are legal loopholes, and I find it financially beneficial to exercise said loopholes, I have a responsibility to do so. I don't owe you anything, sorry buddy.

I'm guessing by his general attitude toward medical insurance he's not aware of the costs associated with good medical care.

Unless I had a heart attack or got cancer, I would be looking at a $15,000 bill IF something happened. (And if it was the latter, cancer patients without insurance can actually enroll in Obamacare even when enrollment is closed.)

So, I'm paying $400 a month and the likelihood of me needing the actual insurance, within the next five years, is incredibly low.

Why not take that $400 a month, buy a crappy house, fix it up and resale it? Then put the proceeds from the sale into a savings account, which could then be used to cover any said medical cost?

You're incredibly naive when it comes to the costs of medical care.

If it's not that simple, than explain why rather than take shots at my intelligence.

Not one of you have provided real data or numbers to prove that insurance, at my age, is a financially wise decision. Many of you have simply insulted my thought process in simply questioning the value of insurance, and a couple of you have just insulted my intelligence. And then others preferred to compare health insurance to car insurance. It doesn't really bother me...but you aren't proving anything other. Some of you have provided personal examples...which I do appreciate.

I understand that there is risk in not having insurance...I've never said it's a no-risk decision. However, I don't believe there is anything dumb in questioning the actual financial benefit of health insurance to someone my age.
