A Sea Of Red

Well, Gillespie lost to Warner last night, and certainly made it much closer than most anticipated. I personally thought Gillespie would lose by 3. I figured the race would come down to how much of Warner's support collapsed under the weight of the bribery scandal, not that they would support Gillespie, they simply wouldn't vote for Warner - and with Warner under-performing in several areas, it looks like this was the case.

But, that being that, let's look at how Lynchburg did comparing this year to last year. As some folks probably remember, last year I outlined how LUCR's utterly disappointing results at LU likely cost Mark Obenshain the AG race. In May, I outlined how poorly the GOP backed candidates did in Lynchburg - including (specifically) at LU. Yesterday is more of the same for 2014 Republicans in Lynchburg.



Sorry the whole image isn't showing for whatever reason. I resized it but it's being bad. At any rate, by every meaningful statistic, Lynchburg's Republicans didn't do as well as they did last year, and with roughly 12,350 votes being the difference in the race, Lynchburg's drop in margin accounts for 2.97% of that deficit. Oops. The LUCR's account for 10% of that drop in margin for Lynchburg. The College Democrats on the other hand, well, they're the flip side of that coin at LU. As bad as 2013 was for the LU College Republicans in likely costing VA the AG race, 2014 was even worse in terms of raw numbers.

And what about the College Libertarians?

Also...I did vote for Obenshain, but am happy he was not our AG this past year.

First off there are still ballots to be counted. Secondly there is the recount. Finally other than whining about LUCR what's your point?

His point is simple: the leaders of the LUCR are not being as effective as they CAN and SHOULD be at recruiting members, informing members and the general campus populace of the issues of the day and turning out the vote.

3300 people voted at LU in Nov 2012. You can't get much more of a captive audience than you have at LU. It literally CAN'T get any easier than it is right there to get people to vote.

No college libertarians that I'm aware of.

You aren't going to get a 12,350 vote deficit made up. Not from the R side. The Ds are pretty good at finding votes out of thin air. The Rs, not so much.

The biggest crime was GOP leadership basically ignoring Gillespie in VA. If they didn't leave him on an island, he'd have been throwing a party on Tuesday evening.

Agreed. Warner did a great job as governor of Virginia...but as Senator, he has failed.

no, that was just two of my libertarian buddies debating from the libertarian point of view. Craig, mentioned in the article, is the reason why LU has a concealed carry policy. No thanks to Mark Hine, who repeatedly killed concealed carry legislation passed out of the SGA, forcing Craig to go around him and go straight to Jerry Jr and the board. Craig is now a legislative aide to del mark berg, and authored a bill that has passed the va house of delegates twice (but killed in the senate) that would protect va citizens from indefinite detention by the feds.

I'll agree that the national GOP threw Kooky Cucci under the bus...but personally, I am glad they did. Not that McAwful has been or will be a great governor, but he at least was willing to compromise so state government wouldn't shut down and the Republicans in the legislature are willing to work with him on some things. Not sure the Cooch would've been so willing had he had a Democratic legislature.

The government slowing its expansion by not passing any new bills for the next few years would be a success in my eyes. It's unfortunate many Americans think that in order for a politician to be effective they have to legislate us to death. :-/

Warner was loved as governor because he gave government goodies to the majority of the population. In essence he bought his popularity, especially with govt workers. Now, as Senator, people realize he's just a rubber stamp for the Democrats. That's progress, at least.

Facts please. Warner froze state pay for his first two years and streamlined a bunch of state operations to make Virginia one of the most efficient states in the nation while preserving Virginia's AAA credit rating, which his predecessor Jim Gilmore (whom he defeated in the 2008 Senate race) put in severe jeopardy following a massive tax cut w/o spending cuts.

I will say this though...one of the things he did that helped cement the love he's gotten over the past 10 years or so was getting VA Tech into the ACC. However, with Tech's football team having fallen off its high horse, that love will only last so long.

As a Senator...he sucks.
