Falwell: Clinton scarier than the devil

Los Angeles Times
Published September 25, 2006

WASHINGTON -- Nothing will motivate conservative evangelical Christians to vote Republican in the 2008 presidential election more than a Democratic nominee named Sen. Hillary Clinton -- not even a run by the devil himself.

That was the sentiment expressed by Rev. Jerry Falwell, the longtime evangelical icon and Moral Majority founder, during private remarks Friday as part of the "Values Voter Summit."

A recording of Falwell's comments was obtained by the Los Angeles Times and confirmed by eyewitnesses.

"I certainly hope that Hillary is the candidate ... because nothing will energize my [constituency] like Hillary Clinton," he said in the recording.

Cheers and laughter filled the room as Falwell continued: "If Lucifer ran, he wouldn't."

Falwell told The Associated Press on Sunday that he did not intend to demonize the former first lady. "That was totally tongue-in-cheek, and everyone in the building knew that, and everyone laughed," he said.

Clinton (D-N.Y.) press secretary Philippe Reines told AP on Sunday, "Working for someone who believes in the Golden Rule, we're not going to engage in such vitriolic discourse, but it seems that a new low has been reached in demonizing political opponents."

The funny part, to me, is that the media has really picked up on this. He makes jokes like this in convocation and church several times a month. All of a sudden a reporter sneaks a tape recorder into a private prayer breakfast and it's news!

0715 this AM and over on ABC, Diane Sawyer is grilling Bill O Reilly- of all people- about this very subject.
For his part, Reilly said to get over it, its a joke, said to get attention and laughs. Thats politics (in his opinion)

Thats what I got to see over breakfast- great start to the day :D

They're all over this (as opposed to the other times that JF makes these comments) because it distracts from Bill's meltdown on FoxNews with Chris Wallace yesterday.

I may be wrong on this but I think it's a relatives. The family at one point owned most of the city (definately a ton on the other side of the mountain). He used it much more in the 80's when he was pumping Moral Majority.

Falwell Airfield is a small landing strip for general aviation only. I believe that Calvin Falwell owns it.

kursh, you probably don't want to land there. It's on a steep hill and very little of it is flat. Not the safest for novice pilots. Try the New London airstrip/dragstrip. Very easy place to fly in and out of and close to town. But it's probably unlike any airport you've been to, at least the hangers they use. You'd love it.
