BBC article on declassified tapes from Lyndon Johnson's term show Nixon to be even more treasonous than previously known. Nixon's complete and utter lack of concern with the truth is the reason I believe Alger Hiss was innocent.

If LBJ had the goods then he should have come forward. This seems to me that there wasn't enough proof to do anything. Plus, it assumes the negotiations would have been successful anyways.

Keep in mind this is just the perspective of one very strong-minded Texan. We don't have the full story and likely never will with most of the parties having passed away. Just because LBJ and his aides thought they had accurate intel doesn't mean they actually did.

All of that said, little would surprise me in regard to Nixon's character ... or LBJ's for that matter.

They were both terrible presidents. But Hiss was a communist. No doubt.

However, I'm not for the criminalization of communists. Heck, we went through this with Van Jones in Obama's administration, a well known communist sympathizer.

Agreed. Two of the more Machiavellian characters in recent political history. If I'm recalling things correctly, Nixon's political career started by answering a newspaper add looking for a clean cut politician.

I think Venona pretty much put the nail in the coffin of Alger Hiss. No way that guy wasn't a spy.
