For a little while the front page of his website gives you a video announcing a new tour for his first album, "She Must and Shall Go Free," as well as the announcement of his latest album, "I Was Wrong, I'm Sorry, and I Love You." Additionally, he's got a link to his page on the noisetrade.com website where you can download that first album for free.

Derek went ot high school with Mrs. Sly and is probably based known for two things:
- * Member of '90s CCM act Caedmons Call
* Uttering bad words in a few songs
I believe I saw him singing in the Second Baptist Christmas production a few weeks back here in Houston. I'm not a huge fan but I like what he is doing with NoiseTrade to share free music.

I really liked "She Must and Shall Go Free." Not so much his newer stuff. No wonder they are celebrating it's 10th anniversary.

His latest solo/concept band work was brilliant. The two albums tie together to tell one story about someone losing themselves in the digital world only to eventually regain an appreciation for creation. He's one of the few artists who writes meaningful, thoughtful Christian lyrics instead of trite, mediocre nonsense.
He definitely had a mixed bag in between the first album and the most recent ones. He's as interested in pushing the envelope musically as he is in selling albums. Wedding Dress, from She Must and Shall Go Free, might be the best CCM song ever written largely because it's a perfect response to garbage like Prayer of Jabez.

It's two completely different musical styles, using two completely different groups of people to handle the recording, and it tells what is essentially a great sci-fi/singularity story in the context of our appreciation of creation as believers. At the very least, the way the two albums work together is brilliant.

#1. There has certainly not been any broad claim of anyone's "brightness" in here.
#2. If we use our deductions skills, the idea of "brilliance" in and of itself requires something to be rare and out of the norm. The probability that some washed up musician from a band that was never really all that good to begin with has put out something that is considered "brilliant" to be quite small. Therefore the assumption of it being anything but "brilliant" without engaging said media can be considered a logical conclusion.
#3. Did you just say "diss"?

The OP called an album, which neither you nor I have heard, "brilliant." Since you doubted the "brilliance" of the album without listening to it first, I implied that you were not very bright. See what I did there? It's kind of funny that I have to explain that to you.

1. Caedmon's Call put out some very good music, especially earlier in their career.
2. Derek Webb, according to the GMA, "has seen career sales approaching 1 million records, along with 10 GMA Dove Award nominations and three Dove Award wins."
3. Some of the best artists have come from "washed up" music acts.
4. "Popular" music isn't always "good" and "good" music isn't always "popular."
RubberMallet wrote:#3. Did you just say "diss"?
Guilty.

no one made any type of claim that they were bright. if someone had, your challenge of it would be valid.
caedmon's call was awful. derek webb's music is obviously awful given the 45 minutes or so i just wasted on it. #3 or #1 which is it and your #4 or #2, which is it?
nevermind that as stated a post above yours, my assumption turned out to be totally correct. some of us are just capable. (there is a claim of brightness)

I reserve the right to judge for myself at a later date. As I said earlier, Derek Webb's first solo album was very good. What I listened to later was downhill. Same with the band… good early on, not so much later.
FWIW - I am very eclectic in my music taste. "Good Music" is "Good Music." What is your idea of "Good Music"?

Logic seems to allude you RubberMallet. I never claimed that Caedmon's Call was washed up, you did (I'd probably agree). Even if I did, "washed up" just means "not selling records" which <might> indicate a decline in the quality of music, but not necessarily. Furthermore… I never said that "unpopular" music is
always "good" and "good" music is
always "unpopular." There is no contradiction in what I wrote.

you agree with me, yet i'm not the bright one.
within the context of derek webb a distinction has been made. we are talking about that band/person. if we are talking industry wide, then who cares. you might as well have said, some bands are good and popular, some bands are bad and popular, some bands are good and not popular, some bands are bad and not popular. thanks for clearing it up. stating that they were good and that derek was popular does nothing to propose that he's graced us with anything that can be classified as brilliant. mxpx sold millions of records. while thats nice and they were fun at the time, i hardly call them brilliant or have any reason to assume that any music they or any member of the band has put out anything "brilliant" or that "brilliance" is even attainable given my experience with their past work. (such is the same with caedemon's call)
its quite simple.
Subject A's Band eventually becomes bad
Subject A's old albums = predominantly bad
Subject A's new albums = probably bad.
its not hard. bands and band members don't usually get better with age. its rare. tom yorke is considerably worse off than early radiohead. billy corgan ? plant? joe walsh? phil anselmo?
you can do much research here to get a glimpse into my taste in music.
btw, his solo album (listened to about 4 songs) is quite blah. the only noticeable aspect of the album is that he said "whore" *shivers*

Which album? Did you listen to "She Must and Shall Go Free"? I think that is a great album. I gave the two newest albums a cursory listen… too quick to form much of an opinion.
