HAMMOND, Ind. (CBS) – The longtime pastor of a northwest Indiana church has been dismissed due to an “improper relationship with a young woman.”
Dr. Jack Schaap, who has been pastor of First Baptist Church in Hammond for 11 years, was removed Tuesday, according to a church spokesman.
The spokesman would not provide the woman’s age, but said she was a member of the church.
A former member of First Baptist and now founder of a Facebook site for former First Baptist members, Trisha Kee, says her group has received information about Pastor Schaap.
“Jack Schapp had left his cell phone on the pulpit and a deacon had seen it on the pulpit and had picked it up to bring it back to him,” Kee said. “From what we understand, the deacon then saw a text come through from a teenage girl in the church, and it was a picture of Jack Schaap and this girl making out.”

Anybody else somewhat surprised the church isn't trying to sweep this under the rug?
Here's an unbelievable nugget from the Tribune's story ...
Chicago Tribune wrote:At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, the chairman of the church’s board of deacons called the pastor’s apparent transgression the “most difficult” issue the church has dealt with.
But chairman Terry Duff said church leaders “had no choice” but to fire Schaap.

If only the church had reacted similarly to his father-in-law a quarter century ago. But apparently his transgressions weren't "difficult" enough. Both chapters of a sad story that damages the reputations of Christians everywhere.

Wow.
Sly, I know where you stand on this, and I'm fully aware of your familial connection. But with regard to your comment about his father-in-law, as heavily as those issues were scrutinized, he was never proven to be at fault - just suspicions.

“WE ARE PENN STATE!”- Schaap’s supporters
Too soon?
Supposedly the 16-year-old part of the story was confirmed to the church tonight. Very sad.

Jack was an egotistical maniac who used his position of power to ruin a lot of lives. The level of hero worship I saw for that man growing up was ridiculous. He came to my church (Gospel Light Baptist in Walkertown, NC) annually for various conferences. I too am surprised the church didn't sweep this one under the rug.

Her name was Rachel. Can't remember her last name. Only dated like a month.

I had a good friend who went there from 88-92. He never bought into the 'hero' worship part of it but enjoyed the school.

The preponderance of evidence was clear. The cover-up itself should be reason alone to substantiate the claims. But that was a quarter century ago and now I'm not real worried about hearing death threats on the other end of the line. The whole mess up there is sad. I'm just glad to see that this time the church appears to be approaching the situation much better.

Oh, ok. I graduated in '99 and my brother in '01 so I probably wouldn't know her unless her family went to church there as well.

Blind allegiance to a man purportedly following God, instead of God Himself, is a scenario rice with potential pitfalls. I witnessed the hero worship and cultish behavior on numerous occasions while growing up in an IFB church.
It's a sad time not only for FBCH, but also for the vast number of second- and third-tier pastors and churches associated with FBCH through HAC which raised both entities up as the ultimate example.
I'm not necessarily encouraged he by the seemingly transparent and forthright actions of the deacon board. We'll see who they choose to replace Schaap. If its another "family man", one should sims start the clock counting down toward the next impropriety. The unchecked behavior of the person in leadership makes misstep inevitable.
Sly, I still admire your family member for taking the stand he did.

I think Hyles is where my Dad got some real wacky views about things like women wearing jeans, "Hollywood" movies being sinful, etc.

Yep. That's what the church/school I grew up in taught and Hyles was a regular guest speaker. Several teachers at my school graduated from Hyles-Anderson.

Dang. I was hoping that this board would remain a Schaap-free-zone.
Sad thing is, the church was initially told he was resigning "for health reasons." Then the Schaap hit the fan, so to speak, and the deacons had to be honest. The guy who told the church the health reasons lie is now the interim pastor
Cult of personality. I went to FBCH for a youth conference when I was a teenager. Tried to meet JH, but wasn't allowed to. The more I learned about the man, the less I liked him.

Point of small correction: the church was initially told it was a medical leave of absence "for health reasons", not a resignation. Reports have been he was trying to convince the board the let him keep the church, if he committed to stop and go away for six months. Thank God they didn't listen, but just think how close they got to another high-profile IFB cover-up they came!
I went to four YCs, I think. YouTube has made for an interesting trip down memory lane the past few days, dredged up because of the Schaap scandal.

I also went to the youth camp there, back in 1977, which was also the heyday of his son, Dave Hyles. And I even have a Scofield Bible signed by Jack Hyles.

I used to wear my college athletic stuff when I visited my friend there. It was always a great conversation piece. He just laughed and introduced me as his heathen friend.

ditto. I grew up exposed to a lot of this craziness as well. My Grandpa pretty much worships Jack Hyles. Very sad. Ridiculous focus on rules with no focus on relationship with Jesus is what I was taught at my school.
