Mrs Purple and I went and hasa good time. Understanding you don't attend a Van Halen concert to revel in David Lee Roth's vocal prowess or enjoy a night of tight rhythmic coordination it was well worth it!
To start with Kool and the Gang.......WOW. Possibly the ultimate opening act. It's the best one I have ever seen. Surpassing Metallica opening for Ozzy and Gojira Pre opening for Metallica. They were also the reason it wasn't difficult to get Mrs Purple to the show! They got the crowd up and festive and we broke out all of our cheesey dance moves! ( since we do mot work at LU, this IS permissible, and fun! ) We even got a shout out!
VH opened with my favorite song UNCHAINED and Eddie was rocking it. I'm not sure how much of it DLR sang because the crowd was singing it loud! At the end of the song, DLR stood there with his cheesy grin, and Mrs Purple asked if Kool and the Gang were coming back ! They played all the quality classics, including a nice monologue by DLR about his dogs which they showed on the screen before ICE CREAM MAN. They also played 4 from the new album, TATTOO CHINATOWN SHE'S THE WOMAN TROUBLE WITH NEVER.
DLR is still a great entertainer and very flexible. Eddie was AWESOME. I saw them last tour and thought he was even better this time. I was disappointed that he didn't come out with his classic red guitar but he came out with a bunch of other colors! I do miss Michael Anthony but its sorta hard to fire your son and nephew!
2 Sidelights:
1- Mrs Purple and I were dancing together during 'Dancing in the Streets' and DLR came over to our side of the stage, smiled and pointed at us......then forgot where he was in the song!
2 - There was a Kenny Powers clone there who was so totally obnoxious the lady next to him dumped beer on top of him!
