A Sea Of Red

I had seen promos for this for a few weeks on Discovery and had been kinda giggling at the backwoods folks on the commercials. I assumed in TN or Arkansas or somewhere. I missed the first few episodes but caught one last night. They follow a couple of moonshine cookers and an ABC officer trying to put a stop to it


The "backwards" moonshine cookers are just West of Halifax County, and in last nights episode the ABC task force raided a house in none other than Lynchburg, VA. It was funny watching them drive there and make the bust. It was over off of Rivermont. Obviously on the run down end. I had no idea any of this was going on around here.

We're in the South. Moonshiners are a given.

I honestly didn't even know that was still a thing. At least an illegal thing.

a guy i worked with in lynchburg made his own. he would can peaches with it. every day for lunch he would eat all the peaches and drink the shine. when i tasted it i was like this isnt that hard at all. then i ate one of the peaches and it was like a punch in the throat.

Doc's dad was a moonshiner. It runs DEEP in the burg.

This is my new favorite TV show. Seriously!

I even DVRed last week when I had some minor coaching issues to deal with.

A lot of tailgates that I go to do that same thing with different types of fruit. A couple bites of fruit and you are in for a very happy football game experience.

Indian Peach . I think they call it that because it doesnt seem very hard, like you said Mallet.

But the stuff is sneaky.

I suggest you go back and read the Jerry Falwell Autobiography....all of Liberty has come from it, not just this

I'm enjoying the show so far. I've had the real thing on several occasions and I must say it's no joke. Peaches, as well as apples and grapes can really take the harsh bite off it so it will really sneak up on you. My grandfather used to sell the stuff when I was a kid and even now he always has a jar or two of apple "brandy" in his basement. He swears by it as a cold remedy.

I'm pretty sure the show is fake. It seems like the cop part is real, but the actual moonshiner part is staged. I read that Tim (main character) is actually starting his own legal moonshine company so this is good exposure for it.

Most of these shows are completely fabricated, that's why I don't like watching them anymore. It first started with the Repo show. It just got so ridiculous that every repossession was so obviously fake. I have a hard time believing that there is a single genuine reality show on tv now.

Ditto x 2. Reality shows aren't about accuracy at all.

actually I found a podcast that interviewed Tim and his side is real. He lives in Climax, VA. He's the chief of the volunteer fire department. And he illegally makes moonshine. He's had the idea for this show for a while and finally got somebody to do it. He explained that according to VA law, in order for a moonshiner to get arrested, he has to be physically caught in the act with the finished product on hand. The tape of him doing this can't get him in trouble as it could be water in those jugs for all the viewer knows, although it does pretty much out him. His entire goal is to do this legitimately and I would imagine that this show and they money they pay him is helping him get there.

But there are certainly things about the show that annoy the heck out of me that every reality show does. The constant recapping, the "tricking" the viewer with cut up clips making you think something is happening that is not, added in phony stock sound effects that we've all heard 100 times before. I don't know why they think we're so stupid. If anybody ever watches Gold Rush, I think 30% of the show is the narrator telling us about what happened last year, or what happened earlier this year, or even what happened before the commercial break. They cater so much to the guy just flipping around the channels that the regular viewer gets the shaft.

Thanx for the re-direction. Never been to this part of the site. Cool that so many are way ahead of me on this one. Guess when you live 3000 miles away you miss a few things. Now about the coaching thing........I know a guy.

Oh its def beefed up for TV. They make everything look back woods redneck but a lot of the roads they are on are not far away from civilization or whatever else. Not to mention the things like the person on the 4wheeler with a shotgun and stuff....totally setup.

It would be hard for me to believe that he runs around in that beat up truck too with a rifle in the dash...my man has a BMW sitting in his driveway. I doubt he lives in the doublewide either. Again though, all of these statements are coming from someone that always doubts first.
