For all you guys who love watching the Weather Channel, Snowshoe Ski Resort just got 9 inches of snow last weekend, and that's only 3 hours from Lynchburg!
Fall colors take a back seat to white in W.Va.
By Rick Steelhammer An early wintry storm left nine inches of snow on the ground at 4,848-foot Snowshoe Mountain Resort in Pocahontas County.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The prevailing fall color was white in the higher elevations of West Virginia on Monday, after three days of scattered snowfall that left accumulations as deep as 9 inches.
"We've had decent snowfalls around Halloween before, but never anything this big this soon," said Chip Chase of White Grass Ski Touring Center in Canaan Valley. "It's really rare."
A 9-inch accumulation was reported Monday at Snowshoe Mountain Resort in Pocahontas County, following off-and-on snowfall that began Friday night.
Wow, we're still hovering near triple digits down here.

I and the family are heading up to Pocahontas County the weekend of the 14th. Two years ago, we took a trip to Lewisburg (we head west once or twice a year in the fall) and encountered closed roads due to snow close to Marlinton. IMHO, nothing betas WV for a quick getaway, and it is one of the few places in the east that you can see the night sky in full glory.

Rogers3, everyone associates West Virginia with outdoor adventures like white water rafting, skiiing, and mountain biking, but the newest adventure there is zip lines from mountain top to mountain top:

For higher adventure I'll stick with snowshoeing and winter camping in Dolly Sods!

It's been awful. I've been in San Diego all week for a conference and when I stepped off the plane in Charleston yesterday, it was in the high 30's.
I hope it's not another cruel winter for us up here!

You have my permission to drag it 150 miles Southeast if you'd like.

Come on, are you guys going to let TDDance drop a San Diego on you without calling him on it. I have a whole thread devoted to my interactions.

Not till next Tuesday...and then it must stop in Roanoke. He does not have my permission to send it to Virginia Beach.

Sly, I don't recall TDDance referencing any pro athletes, movie stars, TV stars, or famous businessmen or preachers that he knows personally.

Snow and cold in general serve no purpose if you aren't on a mountain with lots of free time.

He may drag it here for only one day - Christmas. Then it must warm up and melt all remaining traces of snow within 24 hours after Santa returns to his humble abode. That is the only reasonable use for the white stuff I have ever been able to concede.

You only work 9-10 months a year already now you want snow days? No wonder our education system sucks.

Snow is only a good thing if my office closes...for the entire day and I don't have to drive home in it. Walking a mile in it after abandoning my car in a church parking lot the week after I moved to Roanoke was not fun.

yeah I mean, I could understand at least being outraged about personal days, but snow days? I mean come on they even make those up.

common misconception-trust me I am busy at conferences, planning for next year, etc. in the summer. regardless, I work at a private school-a highly academic prep school. trust me, our education system doesn't suck. (but who doesn't love a snow day??)
