While surviving in a zombie world is extremely interesting and will be tolerated/encouraged in this thread, it is far less likely. Plus 90% of your daily life would be avoiding zombies.

I think we need a checklist of self sufficient skills we need to prepare for this

1. Make a fire
2. Water collection
3. Small scale organic farming
4. Hunting
5. Scavenging

In the case of no zombies, I think I'll be headed south and maybe a little west. I'd like a mild winter, but I'd also like to avoid hurricanes.
With zombies, I'll either stay put or possibly migrate to some deeper wilderness. But traveling seems kind of dangerous

I plan to have my gutters leading into a large cistern. I don't think my yard would be all that adequate for growing vegetables since it's pretty much a pile of rocks right now, but I might be able to work it. I am a little concerned about security and local riffraff trying to steal my zucchini. I mean, a gun won't last you forever when you can't go to Ace and get some bullets. Maybe bow hunting is the way to go anyway. And you can defend your property that way as well. Food preservation would be an issue too, now that I'm thinking about it.

Hygiene is on you.

come on, hygiene is for panty waists. If you guys hadn't been using antibacterial soap your whole life, you'd have built up a resistance to that stuff by now. I on the other hand haven't been wasting my time "bathing" or "washing my hands". I say bring on the MRSA and the typhoid.

Stockpiling. Really handy are the flamethrower rounds for the shotgun (close-in zombie defense) and for those trying to steal my veggies, the flechette rounds are pretty nasty. Some armor piercing rounds can come in handy, as well... sabot rounds will give you some range with a nice rifled barrel. Heck, a good old Remington 870 with some interchangeable barrels would make for a great all around tool in the post-apocalyptic world
#353531
agreed on the Remi 870. never go wrong with that one.

saving for a breecher barrel for mine, already have the 5 pos collapsible stock/pistol grip and dayglo sights on there.

felt the laser idea was over the top tho

I'm telling you guys, firearms are just have too finite of a lifespan. It could probably give you a good start for a few years, but eventually the ammo will run low, or get wet or something. And then on top of that, you're not going to be able to properly take care of the gun itself. But eventually, you're gonna need to learn how to use a spear. Dogs are another good idea. You could breed them and they could hunt with you, protect you, or if need be you could eat them. On the zombie side of things, a zombie dog is a possible down side. It depends on which version of zombieism you're working with. If it's a virus or something, it would be a human virus and it's probably not going to affect dogs. Although it would be kind of funny to see a dog chasing you as slow as a zombie moves.
#353551
isn't the loss of speed exponential though?

IE: would a zombie dog be as slow as a zombie human, or just as slow proportionally to a regular dog as a zombie human would be to a regular human?

in that case, the zombie dog would still be pretty fast compared to a regular human.

someone needs to run this by the folks at the School of Engineering.

You are right; this fact is foreshadowed in the various "end of the world" movies. To augment my small arsenal, I should start looking for a good crossbow. Dogs... my kids mini dachshund can get after some rats, but not to hot on the big game.

bump this up due to this place being a ghost town

With all of the popularity of prepping TV shows I wonder if any of you have put any more thought into this. I'm not a prepper myself but it's hard not to think about "well this is what I'd do" when watching those kinds of shows. I've started gardening within the last year or so. I'm not very good at it yet so hopefully civilization can hold together for a few more years or else I'll be living on zucchini and green beans. Does anybody have any other skills? Maybe we could form a coalition.

an 870 is a great weapon. you can take people out at a hundred yards, or close range, small or large game, and with a solid stock makes a good club when the ammo runs out! You could also rig a bayonet on it probably, although the sks with bayonet is a real hand to hand combat weapon! You could beat an elephant to death with that thing.
