A Sea Of Red

I think it is about time to start following this storm from a Lynchburg perspective. The doom & gloom prophets (aka meteorologists) are saying it could reach category IV status. I've endured those types of storms here in the Gulf and they are serious business.

Here in Roanoke, I'm not expecting anything more than some wind and rain. With Hurricane Isabelle, it seemed like everywhere west of Liberty mountain just got wet, while to the east there were downed trees, power lines, etc...

Living in Virginia for 19 of my 20 years, (the western part), the only two storms that really affected us were Hurricane Fran (in 1996 I think) and TD Jeanne (which dumped 8 inches of rain).

I expect this storm will continue to push eastern. The more it strengthens, the more eastward of the track it will take. You actually want this thing to grow as strong as possible, as on it's current track (if it were to strengthen) it would miss.

Yeah, Fran was 96...Isabelle affected my family (in the Farmville area) my freshman year at LU (03), and I remember some storm dumping a ton of rain.

I remember it because I was staying at the Inn (while they were finishing East Campus) and a ton of people stayed there because they were evacuated

2 days ago this storm was headed straight for me here on the South Coast of the DR, but it tracked further north and we just cought the edge of it. Irene is a big girl, and even though her center has moved on toward the Bahamas, we were still getting 20-30MPH winds from the back end until a couple of hours ago. She's going to get nothing but bigger and stronger, and unless she veers East, the MidAtlantic coast is probably going to find out what a category 3/4 hurricane is like.

Most of our younger posters probably don't even remember when Hugo ravaged the Carolinas. The region hasn't really experienced much since until this one.

Track continues to move farther east. What it does through the Bahamas should be the key. If it's stays at it's strength, it will continue to move east. If it weakens, the mid-atlantic should be worried.

Ironically enough, I almost went to NC State to study meteorology.

Remember Hugo (89), Fran (96), Bertha (96) & Floyd (99) quite well.

there was one in '84 I believe that was supposed to decimate the east coast. We all had the day off but nothing ever happened.

I think it was '84- I was still in high school.

It is sounded like you might want to grab some emergency supplies up there toward NYC.

yeah keeping an eye on it. Checking gutters and drains today and tomorrow, weather stripping and windows/doors, etc.

You thinking of hurricane Gloria? I think that may have been '85. That's the one I remember most as a kid.

Great. I have been paying WAY too much attention to this over the past 4 or 5 days and I was convinced SE Virginia was going to be out of the woods as the storm strengthened and the track kept going east. Then I wake up this morning and they have started to shift it west again. Isabel was not fun. I really don't want to do this again especially in the middle of the night.

I was an LU freshman. Gloria was a walk in the park. If this storm doesn't lose steam it will be an eye-opener to much of the East Coast about what we Gulf of Mexico-bordered states endure on a regular basis.

I was wondering how long it would take for Sly to chime in on how "our hurricanes are so much worse than yours."

I guess if the storm hits New York and they lose power, the Mets have an excuse to lose every game the rest of the season (they might do that anyway, but now they can share the Astros' excuse from 2008).

I'm not saying Gulf hurricanes are worse ... just that we get them more frequently and that east Coasters really don't know what to expect.

Sly, everywhere on the East Coast SOUTH of the Mason Dixon line knows what to expect during a hurricane. We are not as soft as you people who live in that bubble of flyover country called Texas think.

As for the yankees... they don't know what to do about anything anyway
