I would be interested to see the Apple increase on this a year from now. Those states in the western part of the country probably are Droid because of Verizon being by-far the best coverage out there. With the iPhone available on Verizon, I wonder how much of the Android market will switch to Apple once those contracts are up.
Momentum on this has actually swung considerably toward Android over the past 12 months. The iPhone has been on Verizon long enough to have been reflected to a certain degree in this chart. But you may be correct that it may begin to swing especially if the long awaited iPhone 5 ever comes out before the end of the year.
California is interesting because service issues are not a factor and it is the home state of the iPhone. And yet it still can't keep up with the pervasive growth of Android.
