I really fall more in love with Amazon.com every week. This was on their homepage today.

Thank you, Amazon. You're pretty awesome.

As far as how they're pricing this, you get the first 5 GB for free, and it's basically $1/GB after that. But the music you purchase from Amazon doesn't count towards your used storage. And if you buy an mp3 album, you get 20 GB free for 1 year.

Hopefully they'll come up with a nice and simple way for this to work on your phone.

the first thing i thought of is this is to compete with apple. didn't they just come up with some sort of cloud storage plan?

I agree with ALUmnus, I love amazon more every day. I have one of their credit cards, which is stored on account for 1 click buying. That can get dangerous fast, trust me

I'm using Dropbox right now for my cloud sharing. Jdub, I think you're talking about MobileMe by Apple....They've been at it for a while but have been charging quite a bit which I think is about to change since everyone else is offering free services.

I've used Dropbox in the past but not recently. Have they upgraded its capabilities? It was always clunky back in the day.

This is Amazon getting out ahead of Apple. It's a great move. Apple bought a streaming music service called Lala not that long ago and the obvious conclusion was that Apple was headed toward the cloud for iTunes. The ENORMOUS datacenter that Apple is building in western NC seems to be directly related. Amazon got there first and I think that's big for a number of reasons. Primarily I think it shows that Amazon is both efficient and agile. It's impressive.

As for the cloud music services themselves... There's a lot for me to like about the concept, but data caps from wireless providers could really squash the cloud party in a hurry. I'm grandfathered into an unlimited data plan with AT&T at the moment, but I realize that's the exception and not the rule these days. Seems we're headed for a showdown on this one.

I use it frequently between my Mac and iPad. Has worked great for me. It's fairly easy to go back and forth.

I've always looked at Dropbox as more of a way to share files with other people. I'd rather use a flash drive than Dropbox to transfer files from place to place.

Amazon's really been going after new markets lateley. They're really charging hard at Netflix with movie rentals and purchases. And from what I've read, they're in a much better position than Netflix to continue growth in that area.

The more I think about this new Cloud storage, along with their new Android app store, the more I think it's timed perfectly with the influx of tablets (including their own Kindle). Why would anyone buy the tablet with the most gigs now? You'll never have to store a bunch of data on your tablet with services like this.

By the way, if you're an Android user and you haven't downloaded Amazon's app store yet, you really should. They offer a different free paid app every day.

On a side note, I don't know how this could or even would tie together, but HP now owning webOS brings a new player to the table. WebOS is heavily cloud-oriented, and HP being the largest PC maker in the world, is now shipping every PC/laptop it makes with webOS included. Combine that with their new mobile devices (Pre3 & Veer) and new tablets (Touchpad), they have a nice web of products that are really integrated together. If you can't tell, I really love webOS, it just doesn't have the market share or apps to compete. Hopefully HP can change that.

It's the same thing as dropbox just with more free space. The ability to buy music from them and store it on there is the only difference that I see so far.
