90.9

Just a random question here, is it just me or have the toned it WAY down a lot? Now it just sounds like Spirit FM. I don't mean to be rude but... it sounds terrible. I used to listen to it all the time in high school when they played more of the rock and rap stuff, but now it's soft and it's almost unbearable.

Just on a side note, my father is in his 50s and even he says he hates how soft it's gotten.

If any of you work at the station, please change it back :)

sadly I agree...I listened not so long ago to see if they had stayed the course or gone soft, and it seems as if they have. I don't know anybody working there anymore, so I can really help you in that regard.

I would suggest a simple e-mail with some suggestions and how they should try to separate themselves from Spirit. Separating ourselves from them was my big thing when I was the music director there and DJ Pdogg helped me a lot finding new rap artists. I hope they get back to that because I think when I left, and when my brother took over things were right where they needed to be.

It had gotten softer, but this year they've totally changed it to an all soft format. I will send a friendsly suggestion to them. I used to love it but now its just terrible. I mean you'll have the hosts talking with hip hop music playing in the background and then mercyme comes on... random lol.

Sounds like you may have been the one making those choices years ago. You all did a very good job with the music :D

I listen to Pandora almost exclusively now because of the format changes.

I dont tune in as much because I mostly listen to ESPN Radio but when I do I hear some elements of Spirit FM but I do hear LeCrae and Tripp Lee and some harder stuff but not a lot...I think that it really depends on who the music director is and that will shape a lot of what you hear...send a note to the music director and to Jamie.

The Light should be similar to Air 1 with rap thrown in. If they do that, they have a good station.

They still play quite a bit of rock and rap, mostly in the evenings when i listen to it over the internet stream. They need to modernize like the other stations and get a android app.

I was listening one Saturday morning and the guy was playing what sounded like a bunch of 80's inspirational stuff, with some Christian comedians thrown in. It was like the ultimate Christian stereotype. And when the DJ was talking, I could barely hear the guy and he sounded like he didn't want to wake anybody up. Sad.

Honestly, though, they are really handicapped with the quality of stuff actually available for them to play.

I will say this...it was an uphill battle to even continue the techno show even when I had to record my show many weeks because of night footbal games and really the show got little if any support from the station as a whole (and I didnt get much suggestion as to marketing it either).

I seem to remember the christian metal show that was on saturday nights and even after basketball season it would be on one week and off the next.

i liked it better when ryan plice was working there, it seems to have all gone down hill for me since then. probably because he liked the metal/hardcore stuff. i'm guessing no one working at the station likes that stuff now, or they aren't allowed to play it. i know LU had issues one time when winter solstice played on campus - or at least that is what i was told, I wasn't able to go to that show.

All I ever hear on there is worship music now honestly. Which is fine, nothing wrong with it. My thing is the station brands itself (and actually to my knowledge still does) itself as being an alternative, playing the best in Christian rock, rap, etc. I don't mind the occasional worship song at all (which is fine, just know I'll change it if it's not Hillsong :D ) But if you're going to change it, change the branding to worship music.

Anyways, it's completely sad they ever changed in the first place. But I'll bet somebody thought rock and roll was from the devil. :D

That is really not true anymore. I thought that I would be restricted a ton while there but aside from a few things about harder must not being played too early in the day there were really no restrictions.

Air 1 with some rap thrown in pretty much summed up what I tried to accomplish while there...I just tried to mold a well rounded rotation

What BJ said was true, it really depends on the music director...you have to be able to put aside your own tastes and look at who listens, some people aren't able to do that...if I had it my way I would've put on much harder music all the time, but that would've alienated a ton of listeners, which is why I went with the well rounded approach...

I am not going to trash on 90.9, because its much tougher then people realize, but I would like to see a more progressive station and more, well, college like...

Let me clarify. By "available", I meant what's available, not what's allowed. The industry (Christian music) as a whole is just not very impressive right now. There's a serious lack of quality. That's why they can't go for an hour without playing Switchfoot or Skillet. Will play covers of secular songs (Duran Duran, anyone?). Will play ANYONE who is thought to be a Christian and doesn't swear in their songs (only to get burned when that turns out not to be the case). That's the 90.9 I have come to know.

I'm exaggerating (a little), but you get my point.

Unfortunately, I agree. I worked with my church in getting concerts to come to our church (very popular bands you've heard of), and I can tell you firsthand a lot of "christian" bands aren't really christian. I could specify which ones, but I won't because every time I do some diehard fan of theirs argues with me and it just gets annoying.

Bump. Does it sound any better this semester, or is it still the same soft stuff? I haven't been able to listen to it since LU stupidly decided to install an 88.3 satelite in clifton forge (at 90.9) so it blocks my signal.

A lot of your harder stuff (and more of your rap and hip hop) usually comes on in the evening or later hours...not like hardcore metal kind of stuff (like August Burns Red or a lot of your Tooth and Nail artists) but a lot of your "Spirit FM" sounding music is during the day when sometimes you have moms and dads listening or your kids home from school or are homeschooling.

Hmm...I must have confused them with someone else...not necessarily confusing similar names but maybe I had something in my head and crossed some thoughts up while I was typing them out

The listen to Spirit FM.

On a side note, the signal for 90.9 has been terrible ever since they had their "light-a-thon". The volume and clarity of the signal is really weak, no matter what radio I've tried it on. I don't get it.

They said they had to move their transmitter and reduce their power temporarly. I see nothing from the FCC that verifies that, as they would have to file with the FCC for a Construction Permit to do anything to it.

My guess would be that it's probably because of the interference from the Clifton Forge 88.3 satellite. It intrudes all the way to Bedford (from the old 100 watt signal).

It's just sad what it's become. Whenever I visited Lynchburg I couldn't wait to listen to it when I was in middle school and high school. Now it's just... bad. I don't get it. There's already a Victory FM. We don't need two. That and why does Victory FM keep buying little stations all over the place so that 5 people total can hear it? They put one in Berryville VA, a 1 watt station! First of all, nobody lives there. Second of all, the station goes maybe 3 miles, doesn't really serve any community, and you must also pay maintaince costs if anything goes wrong with it. Just doesn't make sense to me. But sorry I got off subject there.

bj. you are thinking of solid state records, a tooth and nail owned imprint.
