The Christmas shoes song doesn't make me cry, and I'm the biggest softy on the planet. I was asked to sing it for a Christmas program at work and refused to do it because IMHO the song really sends a twisted message.
If the mother is such a saint, then she would know what Jesus considers to be "beautiful" and would have taught her son, and neither one of them would give a rip about her having a stupid pair of shoes to wear on her death bed. He would be WITH his dying mother, not running around shopping in his raggedy clothes. Then there is the issue of the kid going to the store to buy the shoes when he didn't have enough money. Is he just ignorant, or did he go knowing he was short and figure some sucker............ oops, I mean "kind-hearted person" would pay the difference? Add to that the fact that he is running around "dirty from head to toe" doesn't speak very well for his parents, no matter how poor they are.
OK, you can all call me Scrooge now, I don't care. I think the song is at best misguided, if not plain stupid.
Oh, and LUConn, maybe after reading this you won't have to change the channel on the radio next time they play it.
