I was just using a Q-tip brand Q-tip and it was just a piece of garbage. The cotton started coming loose before I even did anything with it. Store brands in this case are far superior. Which leads me to ask, what are products in which you need a name brand because store brands suck? Personally, I have Great Value or Up and Up for just about every consumable product in my house except for any kind of soda. I mean, Dr. Thunder and Mountain Lightning are good in their own right, but they are just not as good as the real stuff. Generic cola is a nice change of pace every once in a while, but it like the rest of the generics seem to go flat really fast too.

Hershey syrup, for one.

I was just b#$%ing to MrsPA the other day that the generic stuff tastes like chemicals.

brown, sticky chemicals that you really don't want on your ice cream, as it turns out.

oh- add Oreos to this list.

don't even think about trying generic Oreo's. Hydrox are close, but no cigar.

Medic's spot on with both, although working in student ministry, we have our fair share of "chocolate sandwich cookies" aka crappy off brand Oreo's.

its probably my mom's fault....she would buy garbage bags of frooty loopys at aldi's and actually refill old boxes of fruit loops with them.

I'm with you in regard to the psychological aspect of the cereals, Mallet. Although I am down with much of Malt-O-Meals line ... especially their knock Cap'n Crunch.

I would suggest TP would have to be on the list.

Canned green beans, maybe other veggies, but especially the green beans. They tend to leave green stains on everything, like they're artificially colored. And they sqeek in your mouth as you chew them, like frozen beans do.

Store-brand diapers are pretty much a form of torture to your child. Anyone who says otherwise is about as honest as the organic-is-better crowd. They've convinced themselves to believe it.

Store-brand pudding is also not as good. Jell-O is the best you can buy.

On the flip side, I actually think that Food Lion rootbeer is actually better than most of the brand names out there.

The two I always stick to name brands with is TP and Batteries. MY parents would but TP that had to be made by Mead. If I ran out in my trapper keeper, I could always take a couple sheets off the roll to fill in.

We do a lot of store brands (some are actually BETTER than the name brands, IMO). TP, detergent (laundry and dish), peanut butter, jelly, ketchup, soup -- these are some of the things I have to have the "real stuff" for.

It's funny how much of the store brand stuff is just the name brand with a different label on it.

Come on, a Trapper Keeper reset? That's top shelf. Incidentally I used to visit my great grandmother in Chillicothe and put up with that hideous odor coming from the Mead mill.

I like generic medicine (ibuprofen, sudafed, etc).

The Wal-Mart stuff was great in college but man, if I drank more than one Mountain Lightning a day, I'd be sick.

I agree w/ the generic TP. Not worth it.

i go with generic/store brand on almost everything. i only go brand name when the generic brand just doesn't cut it or its too much of a risk to go generic, like with toilet paper - i definitely want to go with what i know is quality there...

I dont get the Malt-O-Meal cereals because they dont have my favorite cereal (Raisin Nut Bran). I get the store brand for cold medicine when I get sick (which happens about twice a year) although Im trying to integrate a few more store brands and save money

A few things for which I must have the name brand:
TP
Bread - store brand bread seriously degrades the quality of a good Dagwood special.
Contact solution - I wear RGP's (hard contacts), and only one brand (Boston) doesn't irritate my eyes.
Personal lubricant - Slick Willy just ain't havin as much fun with Wal-Mart brand. KY is overpriced, but worth it. (Maybe ATrain has a preference here himself, too.)
Cool Whip - this is more the wife's decree, but absolutely no store brands of this in our house. Personally, I can't tell the difference.
Meats - especially bags of bonless, skinless chicken breasts. Tyson is tops here, and a big bag sold at Sam's Club goes a long way.
